The Seneschal has announced his desire to bestow upon me the Seneschal's Medal of Merit for my efforts in liaising with the Kingdom's webhost during the February 2023 "Wittpocalypse". I appreciate this gesture, and I have no doubt that this award is being made by the Seneschal in good faith and honest gratitude. But for me, unfortunately, this award has to be seen in the political context of the last few Cosas.

The same Seneschal who is making this good-faith offer of gratitude once talked, in dehumanising and borderline misogynist terms, about "the constant stream of excuses flowing from the bottomless maw of Miestra". His Distáin has repeated on several occasions that he considers me a negative influence on Talossa (to the extent that he looks forward to the day when I retire and become inactive), and  regularly accuses me of improper and/or illegal behaviour in service of sheer egotism - something about "crushing Talossa into a tiny thing you can put it into your pocket".

Recently, the Minister of STUFF accused my party of "spewing vitriol" while claiming that the governing party was "a force of good and charity". It is increasingly impossible for me to understand how someone could watch how Brenéir and AD have treated me personally (and all their political opponents) over the years, and hold this as an opinion. It can only be: "we never spew vitriol, and also when we do spill vitriol, its targets deserve it". They call this tribal morality.

This is a contradiction which is continually swept under the rug. In Talossa, we expect to be able to demonise and smear our political opponents one minute, and to pretend that we're all friends and compatriots in a healthy environment the next. Break a person's legs, then wonder why they don't respond to your birthday party invitation. This will be spun as "Miestra hates her political opponents", but I have absolutely no animus against - to pull names out of a hat at random - X. Pol Briga or Chief Justice Cjantschéir. These people have fought me politically, but have never treated me with contempt.

I am pretty sure that I know in advance what the response to this will be. The Distáin - possibly the Seneschál and other Cabinet members - will line up a whole list of quotes and screenshots, perhaps dating back a whole decade, to prove that I am a rude and vulgar and combative person. All true, but irrelevant the point I'm making. If we are accept that, for example, because of "Rough Music" in 2016, I deserve everything I get, what is the consequence of that? Shut up and accept your medal? Pretend that everything's okay? Or what?

It is quite likely that the Distain will get his wish and I will become inactive in Talossa quite soon, precisely because the leaders of the current Government have made Talossan life unpalatable for me over several years, and there's only so much a body can take. Let me clarify, though, that they're not the *worst* I've ever gotten in Talossa. I had much worse, 25 years ago, from King Robert I, and much more recently, from former Justice Marcianüs - though I must note that the Distáin was very keen to believe and repeat a zero-evidence smear that the Justice made about me on his way out of the Kingdom, in between hoping I would die of cancer. Under these circumstances, accepting an honour - howsoever well-meaning - from the current Government would stick in my craw as the rankest hypocrisy.

I therefore, reluctantly and respectfully, decline the award of the SMM. But if the Government *is*, in fact, grateful for what I did in the Wittpocalypse - and, more recently, as Public Defender and punching bag for Justice Ragemonster - they could display it much more sincerely by acknowledging that the way they have behaved towards myself and their other political opponents has been at times mean-spirited, unfair, and has led to lasting resentments which are not going to go away without being addressed. Then there might be hope that we could enter a real process of Truth and Reconciliation where we could all face up to the consequences of our actions. Given my experience of the leaders of the Government, I have no hope this will happen, but surprise is always an option.

Miestra, I am sorry to see you decline the award but, yes, the gratitude is genuine and expressed in good faith.

It is unfortunate that you're declining the award, Dama Miestra, but thank you again on behalf of the country, nonetheless.

I'm sorry to hear that you're planning to become inactive, and I hope you'll reconsider.  You have announced this many times in the past; I hope that you change your mind again, and that you will remain an active force in our country for many years to come.
