Wittenberg / [Technology] Webhost invoicing issue
July 22, 2022, 07:16:40 PM
So I remembered this good idea which was raised at the time we were struggling to get the domain names paid:

We get a good deal on hosting from DoRoyal, compensating for how much were overpaying for domain names, but we might want to think about lodging an official complaint about how this was handled.

Well, I did raise this idea in Cabinet, and Cabinet agreed that it would probably be a good idea. But when I went to the DeRoyal site to find out whether there were formal "complaint raising" procedures, I found that the Burgermeister had had a further issue with the billing at DeRoyal - namely, that they'd charged him double for the talossa.com domain name that was supposed to be included in the hosting.

The owner of the company apologised for the error and thanked Istefan for pointing it out, and gave us credit on future domain renewals by way of an apology. So given that I'm not sure that adding an additional complaint about the previous billing drama would add any value. I would like other's opinions on whether to just leave it there, including the Burgermeister's.

Fair point.  Simply direct the further deletion of Lexh.C.2.6.5, then.  That's the only reference to A.9.

Done (it's D.2.6.5 btw)

Can my colleagues give a look-see to the Tear Down This Wall, Finally bill?
Add directions to renumber the title, please.

I will if the Mençéi agrees that's what we should do, but renumbering El Lex every time we delete a passage has led us into trouble in the past, because of broken cross-referencing from other laws. (I assume you note that A.17 is already blank.)

And can I beg humbly for the addition of the following? This has been a hobbyhorse of mine from a long time back.

Quote25.6 The Milwaukee Wave shall be Talossa's Official Major Arena Soccer League Team. The Ziu officially authorises loyal Talossan citizens to refer to the team, heretofore known as the "Milwaukee Wave," as the "Fiovă Wave."

I would suggest just changing the punctuation a bit to make it more "standard", as below:

I would like to ask the committee to review this bill. Thank you.

THE NAMING THE NATIONAL TEAMS ACT

Whereas El Lexhatx currently shows that we have National NFL, NBA and MLB teams but no NHL team and the former are named in separate sections (Section F paragraphs 25, 32 and 33 respectively). Let Section F Paragraph 25 which currently reads "25. The Green Bay Packers shall be Talossa's Official NFL Team, and it will remain so until such time as the nation is able to field its own NFL team to contest the American teams. The Ziu officially authorises loyal Talossan citizens to refer to the team, heretofore known as the "Green Bay Packers," as the "Florenciâ Packers." (23RZ40, 23RZ43)"  be changed to read

"25. Until such time as our great nation is able to field our own teams in the respective leagues the following teams will be recognized as the Talossan National Teams.

25.1 The Green Bay Packers shall be Talossa's Official NFL Team. The Ziu officially authorises loyal Talossan citizens to refer to the team, heretofore known as the "Green Bay Packers," as the "Florenciâ Packers."

25.2 The Milwaukee Brewers shall be Talossa's Official MLB Team. The Ziu officially authorises loyal Talossan citizens to refer to the team, heretofore known as the "Milwaukee Brewers," as the "Maricopa Brewers."

25.3 The Milwaukee Bucks shall be Talossa's Official NBA Team. The Ziu officially authorises loyal Talossan citizens to refer to the team, heretofore known as the "Milwaukee Bucks," as the "Benito Bucks."

25.4 The Nashville Predators shall be Talossa's Official NHL Team. The Ziu officially authorises loyal Talossan citizens to refer to the team, heretofore known as the "Nashville Predators," as the "Cézembre Predators."

25.5 The Milwaukee Admirals shall be Talossa's Official AHL Team. The Ziu officially authorises loyal Talossan citizens to refer to the team, heretofore known as the "Milwaukee Admirals," as the "Maritiimi-Maxhestic Admirals."

Also let section F paragraphs 32, 33 and 38 be stricken from El Lexhatx.

This organizes all of our recognized national teams under one paragraph making them easier to locate. The Nashville Predators were chosen because our neighbors in Wisconsin may declare war on us if we chose either Chicago or Minnesota and because one member said he could not in good conscience root for the team from Detroit and I chose Cézembre because the geographically closer provinces already have teams and sometimes it seems that Cézembre is the forgotten province.

If you want to suggest a revision to the Province's maps, then go right ahead, I await your suggestions with interest

Fiôvâ / Deputy Secretary of State
July 18, 2022, 10:31:51 PM
It is my pleasure to announce that new citizen @Bråneu Excelsio has stepped up to be Deputy Provincial Secretary of State, with responsibility for keeping Fiova's Wiki pages up to date.

At an appropriate moment, it is my intention to pass on the Provincial Chancery after Allà-soleu-säp how many years, and I hope to be able to put a candidate before the GA before the next election.
#639
The Seneschal's List, as prescribed by El Lex D.1.5., is, I believe, up to date.

Geez, don't everyone rush to comment on a huge departure from the practice of 25 years all at once :D
#642
While I'm not happy at whatever lack of communication in the Government has led to this confusion, I asked in March if the person who wrote the Wiki page could update it to match the new Guide content, and they didn't

Okay, thank you!  So we can bring up issues about hosting difficulties, but just not really get at the nuts and bolts of any of the software.  Maybe it would be fair to say that we're in a position to tread water, but we can't actively manage or change or update our own stuff?

Well, we can of course update that content on talossa.com, but apart from that, that's a fair summary. I yearn for the day when I can appoint a DepMinTech or a PermSec who actually grasps the nuts and bolts.
#644
Okay, let's be clear in our terms. I am at least able to raise a support ticket when things go wrong on some level - as in the past when Witt or the Wiki or talossa.com have just gone wrong for whatever reason, the kind folks at DeRoyal have set things back on their feet quite expeditiously. So we're not completely helpless.

With the specific question of Wittenberg's running software, I'm guided by the SoS. If he says "we need this updated", the Government would make it a top priority to find someone to help make that happen. My first port of call would be the current Deputy MinTech, Bradley Higgs, who is not a very active Talossan but would be on call. The next port of call would be s:reux da Schir and Grischün in the hope that one of them might be available. In extreme extremities, I have a non-Talossan friend who has helped us out in the past.

I would end by mentioning that - without wanting to cause anyone embarrassment - I have explicitly messaged s:reu da Schir and asked him if he wanted to step into a formal backend admin role like he used to have, and I did not get a positive response.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that either Lüc da Schir or Eðo Grischün do, or they know who does. I have access to the hosting on doroyal.com but I wouldn't even know where to look to find "who has FTP access". As I keep saying, I'm only in this job because all the technical gurus went into retirement.
