Welcome to the nomination thread for the 2022 TMT special edition!
The first category is Classical music to have dinner to in the last day of Earth
Nominations are now open.
We are looking for 25 nominations.
Each person may nominate two pieces of music now with a deadline of 48 hours. (Please include a youtube link)
If we're not full after 48 hours everyone gets another nomination 24 hours after their last nomination.
I would normally warn against nominating songs that are too long, but I suspect that is gonna happen anyway in this category...
As usual we are voting on the written composer + title. That means unless you specify an exact version in the title we are voting on the concept of the piece rather than a specific performance and voters can decide for themselves on which version they decide their vote (the youtube link posted by the nominator will get posted in the voting thread of course, but if you don't think that is the best performance feel free to share another one). If you want votes to only count for a specific performance you need to specify that performance in the title, though in most cases I would advise against that. This will also mean ideally that we have 25 different pieces and no two competing performances of the same piece.
Nominated so far:
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Fanfare for the Common Man
Frédéric Chopin - Nocturne op.9 No.2
Guiseppe Torelli - Concerto for Guitar & Violin in A Major: I. Allegro
Johann Pachelbel - Canon in D
Johann Sebastian Bach - Ach herr, laß dein lieb Engelein (Johannes Passion) [Bach Collegium Japan; Masaaki Suzuki]
Johann Sebastian Bach - Kommt, ihr Töchter (Matthäus Passion) [Collegium Vocale Gent; Philipp Herreweghe]
Ludwig van Beethoven - Für Elise
Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 7, 2nd Movement
Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 9
Ralph Vaughn Williams - The Lark Ascending
Sergei Rachmaninoff - 3rd Piano Concerto, 1st Movement
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - A Little Night Music Serenade No 13 in G Major
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Lacrimosa (Requiem)
12 spots left
This is probably a bit on the nose if you are at all familiar with the book. This classical piece was used in the Sci-Fi adaptation of one of my favorite books by Arthur C. Clarke: Childhood's End. The piece is entitled "The Lark Ascending" by Ralph Vaughn Williams.
https://youtu.be/IOWN5fQnzGk
My own nominations:
1. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Lacrimosa (Requiem)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1-TrAvp_xs
2. Sergei Rachmaninoff - 3rd Piano Concerto, 1st Movement
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwDYWwWGKAw
Kinda predictable obvious picks, but whatever.
For me it has to be Bach:
The opening chorus from the St. Matthew Passion, "Kommt, ihr Töchter", Collegium Vocale Gent, conducted by Philipp Herreweghe, St. Matthew Passion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k4Ph-H5ZO4)
The closing chorus from the St. John Passion, "Ach herr, laß dein lieb Engelein", Bach Collegium Japan, directed by Masaaki Suzuki, St. John Passion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKYscw-nN8U)
Personally, if it were my last day on earth, I would like to hear both of the full works from which these two choruses come.... but I don't suppose I will get that choice. But these two as dinner-time accompaniment - not bad. (I would be in tears - but that's part of the power of JSB).
This is my first posting in any of these threads, so I hope I don't misunderstand the rules and that I'm allowed 🙂
In any case. within the topic, I'd like a little bit sad, a little bit of joy of celebration of what was. And for that reason I go for Beethoven, specifically the 7th symphony's 2nd movement, allegretto.
I see the 7th, but the 9th is actually part of the narrative of the book Seveneves https://www.gatesnotes.com/Books/Seveneves in the story a section is about as the moon is disintegrating various orchestras are continuously performing it until they are silenced by bolides crashing down. (This specific performance as the Berlin wall was erased)
and in a nod to a crossover to a pop cover played to an empty stadium, perhaps on the last day ala Logan's Run
Definitively this piece of Chopin
Quote from: xpb on October 12, 2022, 10:04:05 PMand in a nod to a crossover to a pop cover played to an empty stadium, perhaps on the last day ala Logan's Run
Not sure I'd count a pop cover of a classical piece as itself being classical music. I don't want to be too strict though, so I will add it to the list unless
@Bråneu Excelsio (who proposed the category) objects.
My nominations for Classical music to have dinner to in the last day of Earth are:
From Mexican composer Enrique Mora: "Alejandra".
And from legendary Mexican composer Juventino Rosas: "
Sobre las olas". (Over the waves)
I believe the Berliner Symphonike sounds better than London Orchestra in this situation
BUT the piano version from Nadia Shostakovic is amazing too.

I feel this specific piece is made to have dinner to
with someone in the last day of Earth and that's not how I imagined it at first but listening to it opened my mind to the idea haha (: nice

That's beautiful.

Glorious.
I'll listen to the others tomorrow :)
I tried not to be too obvious with my nominations. I ended up with both my second and a potential third nomination being rather obvious. Oh well :p
1. Rondò Veneziano - Sinfonia per un Addio ("Symphony for a Farewell")
2. Gustav Holst - Mars, the Bringer of War (...of course I did)
There are 8 spots left. Everyone who wants to nominate now gets another nomination every 24 hours after their previous nomination(s).
Alright. This is one of my favorite classical compositions.
Edward Elgar - Enigma Variations, Op.36: IX. (Nimrod)
https://youtu.be/7iM5dymBBI4
3. Ludwig van Beethoven - Mondscheinsonate, 3rd movement
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=352qLWqKN-U
3rd nomination from me:
Dvorak - Symphony No. 9 4th movement (11 minutes, iconic first 2 minutes, amazing next 9 minutes)
It describes the title of the category, I believe.
I'm being rather naughty here, but I would like to hear one of my own pieces of music... you are perfectly at liberty to delete this post if I am infringing the rules!
Ian D. K. Kelly, Symphony in Five small Movements, 2nd movement, "Orlanda"
Orlanda (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VHrTMXVTzg)
4. Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izQsgE0L450
Only two spots left!
Here is one I do NOT suggest for the list here - but I think would be of interest to you all. I, personally, if it really were the last day on earth, would like to hear it again.
Bach wrote his "Art of Fugue", but died before he finished the final fugue in it. Hundreds (literally!) of suggestions have been made for its completion. The one which I like the best is that by Tudor Saveanu, and there is a copy on my YouTube account - but I had no replies back from (now the late) Mr. Saveanu when I asked for permission to republish his work - so this is an *unlicensed* copy - but (IMHO) of great interest.
Contrapunctus XIV (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDHmP1rquHM)
There is another copy of this - not made by me - of Tudor Saveanu's analysis of the structure of this fugue, together with his (proposed) completion of it. That copy is at http://'"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOARf99Trpo"]

Am I too late to post this? (I apologize for always submitting songs, but then failing to participate in the voting later on. Man, I just like music. I can't decide on which piece of music is better than another. Depends on my mood and the circumstances. I mainly would like to share with everybody things I've enjoyed, and hope others might like it too. I really don't get this ranking thing. Musical tastes are too subjective to arrive at any conclusion as to what's best.)
I have a problem... there has not been a single suggestion that I have NOT liked! What a brilliant selection.
I really wanted to sneak in a Pictures from an Exhibition movement, seeing as it's probably my favourite suite, but was unsure about which one. So instead of Mussorgsky, yall get a very predictable Tchaikovsky pick.
Closed!
Voting will start soon in another thread.
Next up in this thread: Nominations for the next category (Eurovision) (Will also start soon, after Ive set up the voting thread)

No you were still on time.
I suppose the voting is also a vehicle for people to listen to the stuff others nominated, in a format that is supposed to be fun (although I understand it appeals to some more than others).
Either way, no need to apologise. Obviously I prefer as many people to vote as possible, but I also separately like to see as many people nominate as possible. Doing one doesn't obligate you to do the other.
While we are voting on classical music in the voting thread, in this thread we now move on to the second category:
Eurovision nominated songs
Nominations are now open.
We are looking for 25 nominations.
Each person may nominate two songs now with a deadline of 48 hours. (Please include a youtube link)
If we're not full after 48 hours everyone gets another nomination 24 hours after their last nomination.
The boundaries of this category are pretty clear. Basically any song that participated in Eurovision, whether its the final or just the semifinal. Songs nominated for the 2020 edition (which was cancelled due to covid) may also be nominated.
Nominated so far:
Chanel - SloMo (Spain, 2022)
Corrinne Hermès - Si la vie est cadeau (Luxembourg - 1983)
Daði og Gagnamagnið - Think About Things (Iceland, 2020*)
France Gall - Poupee de cire, Poupee de son (Luxembourg, 1965)
Francesco Gabbani - Occidentali's Karma (Italy, 2017)
Go_A - Shum (Ukraine, 2021)
Intelligent Music Project - Intention (Bulgaria, 2022)
Konstrakta - In Corpore Sano (Serbia, 2022)
Lesley Roy - Maps (Ireland, 2021)
Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah (Finland, 2006)
Måneskin - Zitti E Buoni (Italy, 2021)
Mocedades - Eres Tu (Spain, 1973)
Mørland & Debrah Scarlett - A Monster Like Me (Norway, 2015)
Raphael Gualazzi - Madness of Love (Italy, 2011)
Urban Symphony - Rändajad (Estonia, 2009)
Verka Serduchka - Dancing Lasha Tumbai (Ukraine, 2007)
Victor Crone - Storm (Estonia, 2019)
8 spots left
My own picks:
1. Verka Serduchka - Dancing Russia Goodbye Lasha Tumbai (Ukraine, 2007)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfjHJneVonE
2. Urban Symphony - Rändajad (Estonia, 2009)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi0FEO2tFFA
Since I don't really follow Eurovision, my only method of nominating songs is to click through playlists of nominated songs and pick ones I like. Luckily I found some good ones.
1. Chanel - SloMo (Spain, 2022)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dwyefl6itpI
2. Lesley Roy - Maps (Ireland, 2021)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6ZUBzqPxds
A couple months ago, we in the States attempted the "American Song Contest." This song won (from Oklahoma):
I'm partial to food fights and violins, so there can be only one.
1. Mørland & Debrah Scarlett - A Monster Like Me (Norway, 2015)
https://youtu.be/vY1FCXDojMU
My first two nominations are my pick for this year's winner,
1. Konstrakta - In Corpore Sano (Serbia, 2022)
And likely my second-most favourite among the recent Italian nominations (actual favourite to come later once I settle a minor detail over what version to submit),
2. Francesco Gabbani - Occidentali's Karma (Italy, 2017)
There are 18 spots left. Everyone who wants to nominate now gets another nomination every 24 hours after their previous nomination(s).
3. Daði og Gagnamagnið - Think About Things (Iceland, 2020*)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HU7ocv3S2o
I was unsure about which version of my next nomination it would be acceptable to submit. The Eurovision submission was the same as the original, Italian-language song, except for the translated title, some cut measures and random English translations here and there. I kinda dislike that, but eh, whatever.
3. Raphael Gualazzi - Madness of Love (Italy, 2011)
(Of course, this would not be possible anymore. Italy has since stopped throwing a tantrum at Eurovision, and the Sanremo winner now automatically advances as the Italian nomination - so it must be fully Italian language as a prerequisite.)
Interesting that nobody has nominated an actual winner so far...
Looking through some of the older songs, Eurovision used to be a rather dull affair. That is, until this iconic, though controversial, performance, which sounded nothing like any of the previous winners, won and completely changed the nature of the whole contest. (There are definitely some parallels there with another, later, winner). Anyway, a Eurovision TMT would not be complete without it.

Perhaps

Correct.
I was looking for a winner to nominate, but then I ended up with a second place finisher anyway ;D

5. Go_A - Shum (Ukraine, 2021)

I did not plan on nominating so many Italian songs *and* I'm not a huge fan of Maneskin, but people were asking for a winner and we seem to have plenty of vacant spots, so while I look for good nominations:
4. Måneskin - Zitti E Buoni
Gotta have some 80s entries too, no? And this one's even a winner.
Corrinne Hermès - Si la vie est cadeau (Luxembourg - 1983)

Since the nominating is going slow, I'm a sucker for the classics, and since we've had the most recent Italian winner, we should also have what should have been their first (sorry for the lack of pyrotechnics and, well, colour), here's
Domenico Modugno - Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Italy, 1958)
JOWST - Grab the Moment (Norway, 2017)

As a replacement for my original 4th nomination, enjoy a song that is... just as good :p
4. Zdob şi Zdub & Advahov Brothers - Trenulețul (Moldova, 2022)
Wait, we are already kinda short on nominations. There is no rule against nominating regular TMT songs. Why not keep Maneskin and nominate Moldova as fifth pick?

Comedy Music
Nominations are now open.

My first Comedy Music nomination:
"Rhapsody in Balls" by Les Luthiers.
These fellows did a lot of Live Shows, that's why the song won't start right away but the performance enhaces the comedic effects, for sure.
For anyone curious, here's the link to the "wacky28" TMT20 spinoff I attempted from 2017: https://talossa.proboards.com/thread/12531/wacky28-presented-tmt20-round-voting
One of the nominations to it was "Dancing Lasha Tumbai," which is currently under consideration in the Eurovision category.
I hope that
@Iason Taiwos renominates "Just Glue Some Gears On It (And Call It Steampunk)," otherwise I may do so myself.
Gilbert and Sullivan - I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General
Bad Lip Reading - SEAGULLS! (Stop It Now)
Of course the main question here is what Weird Al song to pick? I went with a modern classic
"Weird Al" Yankovic - Eat It
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcJjMnHoIBI
Knorkator - Geld
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnO1aqQcMpM
My first two nominations are a classic that someone was going to nominate for sure (and apparently already was a wacky28 entry):
1. Monty Python - Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
And very much not a classic, and only kind of a comedy song, but out of my undying love for Disco Elysium (75% off on Steam rn):
2. British Sea Power - The Smallest Church in Saint-Saëns (Ancient Reptilian Brain /"Karaoke success" version)
There are 16 spots left. Everyone who wants to nominate now gets another nomination every 24 hours after their previous nomination(s).
Still kinda in Eurovision mood.
Måns Zelmerlöw & Petra Mede - Love, Love, Peace, Peace
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv6tgnx6jTQ
Lonely Island - Lazy Sunday
Spike Jones - I'm in the mood for love, featuring Billy Barty and Sir Frederic Gas
Weird Al - Mission Statement
This is completely stupid and makes no sense, and as it's from the "Not only...but also" tv show, I attributed it to the main cast.
Dudley Moore/Peter Cook - Alan-a-Dale
Trevor Moore - Time for Guillotines.
Hugh Atkin - Will the Real Mitt Romney Please Stand Up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxch-yi14BE
While we're on the topic of politics:
Remy - Fed Ass't Printing
Whitest Kids U Know - "The Never song"
I love how it begins as a lesson for kids and ends being a completely illegal thing to be even listening to.
I'm sorry to do this, but things are moving too slow and I'm out of ideas, so here goes 😁
Ylvis - The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)
Dana Lyons - Cows with Guns

Oops, I forgot the forum displays post times in US central time. Can we treat it as having been nominated one hour later?
Hmm sort of complicated cause it shouldnt be possible to reserve a spot in advance.
On the other hand, it was an honest mistake and to be honest, I don't always check all nominations for the time. I just happened to notice it here. So as a one off compromise, let's say it was posted 4 hours later.
(To be clear for future cases, if the remaining posts had been filled before it was corrected it would not have counted)
Anyway, 4 spots left.
Adam Sandler - Hallelujah (Sandy Screw Ya)
Tim Minchin - Dark Side
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xQmJ_vxHB4
The Lonely Island featuring Michael Bolton - Jack Sparrow
This is also closed I think. I need to count again. Nominations for Electronic music open once Ive done that.
Actually, I may need some guidance from
@Ian Plätschisch first. I feel like Electronic music could be anything from a very narrow to a very broad category. In my mind it's something like songs in which electronic elements prominently feature throughout most or all of the song. And by electronic elements I mean synthesizers, sequencers, computer generated music etc. Not electric guitars or hammond organs.
So synthpop would be included, but not most rock songs, even if they have some synths in the background.
Does that sound about right?
That sounds right
Well, in that case:
Nominations are now open for the fourth category:
Electronic Music
For rough guidelines of the category boundaries see my post before this. (I'm not gonna strictly judge every nomination btw. If something is an edgecase and you think it falls within the definition then I'm not gonna reject it.)

We have a witchcraft museum here in Ohio (the Buckland Museum in Cleveland.) I've been there (neat place) and follow them on Instagram. Today they posted pics of a band called Let's Eat Grandma that stopped by the museum for a visit. I'd never heard of the band before. I remembered the name, because I was going to check them out later. Lo and behold, I get on Witt...the same day I first heard of them...to find that Glüc has posted a video by them...

Haven't really gotten around to starting the next rounds, but I promise tomorrow I will post the first electronic group and open nominations for Christmas.

I watched them live yesterday. Last tour they'll give after 55 consecutive years of touring the world. I thought the show finished and a guy appeared and played the first notes (00:14) of this routine, a tear appeared on my eye since I've love these guys so much since I was a kid.
