Title: 2020 Talossan Correspondence Chess Tournament.
Post by: Glüc on May 05, 2020, 10:37:25 AM
- Everyone is welcome to participate

- We will probably use lichess.org (you will need an account, but this is free and lichess is a pretty nice site, running on donations, no ads, no spam emails). If you want there is also an app that allows you to play from your phone

- Format to be determined (if the number of participants is limited we might use all play each other at the same time)

- YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE VERY ACTIVE OR SPEND MUCH TIME TO PARTICIPATE
The benefit of the correspondence format is that we can set the time limit for moves to a couple of (up to 14 days depending on the preferences of the players), so if you want you can just use a couple of minutes every week to think about and make your moves (of course if you want to play faster that is fine too.) The trade-off is that it might take a year for the tournament to conclude, but that's no big deal I guess.

- YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE GOOD AT CHESS
Having fun is more important than winning. Presumably there are plenty Talossans who aren't good at chess either.

- If the tournament is succesful and people are interested, maybe a Blitz/Rapid tournament will also be announced in the meantime (that will be a bit more difficult logistically, but we'll see)

- To register, just announce your desire to participate in this thread. If you want please include:
* What minimum amount of time you will likely need to make your moves (between 1 and 14 days per turn, infinite is also possible, if you expect to be unable to play for a longer time period at some point).
* Whether you already have a lichess account
* Whether you might be interested in a tournament with faster time controls in the future (optional)

Also, if this gets off the ground, perhaps La S'chinteia could report on it?

Count me in.

I can't remember if I have an account there already or not.

I tend to play worse when I take too long between moves because I forget why I've put certain pieces where they are, but I don't foresee a faster tournament happening anytime soon.

It's always a bit of a challenge coming up with enough La S'chinteia content every month, so I'd be quite happy to include this.

Anyone else?

(We probably need more than two players to call it a tournament, though I'd also be happy to just play Ian)

I will make a suggestion for a format next Thursday. There's three of us now. If anyone else wants to participate (The more the merrier of course) please let it be known before then.

Right, it looks like it's just the three of us.

My suggestion would be for us to just play each other once starting at the same time (I'll roll a dice to decide who plays white against who).

*If anyone wins both games, that person is just the winner
*If two players get one win and a draw we do another correspondence game between those two players (every follow up game between players will have opposite colours compared to the previous game between the same players)
If that game is also a draw we try to schedule rapid (15 min + 10 sec per move) games, if at all possible considering the timezones until we have a winner.
*If it's 1,5/1/0,5 the first and second players also play a final game, but the first player will have draw odds (i.e. if its a draw that player is the winner)
*If if's a three way tie, we try to schedule rapid games between all players until we get to one of the other scenarios.

If that is acceptable to both of you then the next step would be for @Nick Korotov and @Ian Plätschisch to create an account on lichess.org and tell me your account names. (I'm "tychooo")

Cool, I guess our game can already start while we wait for Nick. I guess rather than flip a coin myself I'll just challenge Ian so that lichess assigns colours and then that determines which colours we pick for the other games.

Ian, you ok with 3 days per move? (I'll obviously try to play much faster if possible). We can also choose between rating and casual. I'm fine with either.

As for the rules, obviously no engines, opening books, help from other people etc. I guess the games will be public so others can cheer us on if they want but obviously if anyone wants to comment no suggesting moves / anything that might alert us that bad/good moves exist / anything that could help either player in any way.

What's your accountname on lichess?

(Ian, I sent you a challenge btw)

Right, so Ian is white, which means I will be playing white against Nick and Ian will be playing black against him. Nick, we can send you the challenges once we know your username, or you can send the challenges yourself I guess.

(Btw, I'm also using the lichess app which lets me know when it's my turn.)

Cool I sent you a challenge.

Also, I guess either @Ian Plätschisch has to send you a challenge or you have to challenge him. (Go to the others profile, use the two swords button, set time control to correspondence (and days per turn and rating/casual to whatever you want) and then the idea is that you pick the pieces so that Nick plays with white and Ian with black.

As it happened, Nick and I were online at the same time, so we finished our game. It can be found here: https://lichess.org/7OC4KSC4wNeJ

Geez, I was terrible.

Nick and I have to finish duking it out for second I guess.

That ended surprisingly sudden...

(To be fair, I have been playing a lot of online chess the last few months. Made plenty of stupid mistakes but that obviously did help to improve.)

I'm following the last game as well. Very interested to see who will win.

Looks like some progress is being made in the Scurzniescu - Plätschisch game. I'm planning to write an analysis once it's finished.

Fwiw, I'm hoping to organise more Talossan chess in the future. If anyone else is interested in playing a game or participating in a future tournament let me know.

I'm also hoping to organise games with faster time controls. The logistics of that might be somewhat difficult as it would require people in different timezones to be online at the same moment, but it surely should be possible if anyone is interested.

I sent in my piece on the second place game, but I'm afraid it was too late for this months Schinteia.
