Hello and welcome to the 2023 Talossan Music Top 20
It seems like just yesterday that we wrapped up the 2022-2023 Special Edition, but it is again time for the annual main event.

2023 TMT20 Nomination RulesNominations are now open. Everyone (including guests and prospective citizens) is invited to nominate songs to form the 2023 edition of the Talossan Music Top 20.
The rounds format will be the same as last year.
The competition will consist of 150 songs. 106 songs have qualified automatically based on their performance in the 2022 TMT20 or the 2022-2023 Special Edition. Therefore, there will be a total of 44 new nominations.
For now we will start with 3 nominations per person. If we don't have enough songs by 17:00 TST on July 21st, everyone will be free to nominate one new songs every 12 hours.
We are voting on the written combination artist (or composer) + title, rather than the specific version that is being linked to, in case people do not like that version.
If you can, please include a link to YouTube or some other video or audio file of the song. Otherwise I will find a link myself, but I might not always find the best version.
All genres of music are welcome. Nominating an entire symphony is probably not a good idea, but go for it if you want, I guess.
Do not worry about nominating songs because they are not popular enough (or because they are too mainstream). You do not get a prize if your song wins. If you get someone to listen to a song or genre he did not know or like before, that is nice too. We all seem to love our 70s rock classics, and if your all time favorite song happens to fall in that category, go for it! But if it does not, adding some diversity to the list is just as good. Just nominate whatever song you think deserves to be in the list for whatever reason.

For transparency's sake I should probably warn that I may possibly have nominated HSIN? last year and sadly it didn't go too well.
But agreed, it's so hard picking just three.
PS: on the topic of the Smiths, apparently this happened, and it was the best thing to happen to music this year:
(NOT my nomination, although maybe it should be...)
Quote from: Ian Plätschisch on July 07, 2023, 10:19:52 PMUrban Symphony - Rändajad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi0FEO2tFFA)
This is an amazing song, a well deserved winner of the special edition and I would love to have it in the main edition again,
but
what is the criterion you use to decide which of the special edition songs go to the regular edition (re previous participations in tmt)?
QuotePS: on the topic of the Smiths, apparently this happened, and it was the best thing to happen to music this year:
Difficult to be better than the original, but all tributes which can lead to listen again to the Smiths are welcome ! So many good songs.. the compilation album « Hatful Of Hollow » is the perfect first step for those who don't know yet this legendary group gathering a perfect guitarist, a perfect bass guitar player (rip), and the best song writer of the 80's.

I was intending to skip any song that had already been in the TMT20 and didn't realize Randajad was such a song. To be consistent I should replace it with "Maps" (since Zitti e Buoni has also already been in)

Yeah, I unsuccesfully nominated it in 2017. Sad, but fair I suppose.

I don't want to do renominations too often, but this was a staple of early TCAT editions, and they are just so good.
1. Editors - Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors
And two classics in two very different genres.
2. Metallica - Master of Puppets
3. Paolo Conte - Gli impermeabili

I'm rather absorbed by TCAT at the moment and want to be extra sure about my three picks, so I'm happy the deadline is still 9 days away :p

That could just make it more difficult, because you'll have more time to think of even more picks you also want to include...
(That is how it works for me anyway.)

I swear my three nominations are coming before the deadline :p
Highasakite - Golden Ticket
CMAT - Where Are Your Kids Tonight feat. John Grant
The Band - It Makes No Difference (The Last Waltz)
As promised, my three nominations right before the deadline :)
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Elton John - I'm Still Standing
Franco Battiato - Centro di Gravità Permanente
4. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat
The constant repetition with all these subtle changes at the end really hits hard because it underlines the descent into terror and doubt while waiting for death, especially considering the ambiguity about the possibility he may be innocent. Devastating song.
(I promise if we get a 5th nom, I will pick something more cheerful and a lot shorter.)

It's up to Ian, but FWIW I believe the precedent is that you're free to nominate 3 songs if you haven't already done so at any point before the free spots run out.
Nena - Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann
5. Poor Rich Ones - Drown
Three spots left
6. Deep Purple - Child in Time

Round 1 of the Talossan Music Top 20 - 2023!
Many thanks to everyone who nominated songs. Of course, people who did not are still very welcome to participate.
Round 1 consists of ten groups of ten songs each. The top five songs in each group advance to Round 2 (and are given entry into next year's TMT20).
Groups are drawn randomly in such a way that each group contains one 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th place song from a Round 2 group last year, 4-5 new nominations, and 0-1 songs from the 2022-2023 Special Edition.
We will vote on groups two at a time (although you can vote on only one of the groups if you want). Each voting period will last three days (72 hours). Votes cast after that will not be accepted, with the exception that we will always keep going until we have at least three votes per group.
Give your top three songs 3, 2, and 1 points, respectively. You must give points to exactly three songs.

Tiebreakers:
- Number of voters giving 3 points
- Number of voters giving 2 points
- Last year's result (Special Edition > Round 2 > Other)
- Last year's Round 2 Rank
- Random chance
Any song eliminated by random chance (and any song eliminated by random chance last year that is eliminated based on last year's result) will be given entry into next year's TMT20.
Tactical voting refers to either giving more points than you normally would to a song because it would make the difference between it going through or getting eliminated, or giving fewer points than you normally would to a song because it might kick a song you like even more out of the competition. This is hard to prevent, but my very strong request would be to not do it. Give points to the songs you believe deserve to go through, regardless of how others are voting. Doing otherwise reduces the value of votes that came before you, which is unfair to them. Remember that it's not a competition between voters, but a collective effort to make a nice list of songs we like. Thanks.
I did my best with all the links but there is always a chance some are broken or have a wrong version or bad audio quality. If a link is broken or you have a suggestion for a better link, please contact me or post the link in the thread. Officially, we are not voting on the YouTube link, but on the listed Artist + Title.

I think you need to remove the class="link" bits. That was necessary before, but it just messes things up now
(I know this because it sent me in a fit of rage when I was trying to figure this out for tmt special)
After messing about for 10 minutes (before seeing your message) I think I got this fixed

Every year the first round leads to some painful choices, as there are often more than three songs in a round that deserve to make round 2. This year feels like it might be particularly difficult, as there are a lot of good new nominations and several good songs were eliminated in round 2 last year as well. Actually, I like every new nomination in these first two groups, which includes several very nice discoveries for me, so thanks to the nominators. Paranoid is a classic and definitely deserved points here, but at the same time this particular Chvrches song has really grown on me during tmt special.

A Quiet Life - 2
Moaning Lisa Smile - 1
A Quiet Life is easily my favourite discovery so far (though I must have heard it before because apparently it featured prominently in Dark, but I cant recall that). The streak of great discoveries continues because the Battiato and Electric Six ones are bangers too. Battiato in particular would certainly have scored points in group 4, but sadly in group 3 I had none left.
Group 4:
Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors - 3
Requiem - 2
Live in the Moment - 1
This group isn't so strong as the others for me. As usual I was in doubt what to do about Requiem, because I still think it doesn't really fit the tmt format and it would be better if separate parts were nominated instead, but since it is a beautiful piece of music and Editors is really the only song that I feel strongly about, I guess it can get two points here.

Christmas Eve / Sarajevo is the first Special Edition song to survive the first round.
Advancing songs so far are split evenly between new nominations and songs from last year, which is a bit better than new nominations usually do. Let it Be getting the boot is a bit of an upset as it apparently was nominated for the very first TMT20 back in 2009 (before it was an annual event and before it was even called the TMT20 I think) and has been carried over ever since (until now).

Oh dear... It was to be expected there would be at least one group that was gonna be waaayy too strong. Well that definitely happened with group 6. Gonna be a massacre that one.
Group 5
3- Rammstein - Sonne (thanks, I did not know this one !)
2- Foo Fighters - Everlong
1- Aaron Copeland - Fanfare for the common man
Group 6
3- Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence (of course !)
2- Deep Purple - Child in Time
1- Queen - Killer Queen
Some thoughts on Rammstein nobody asked for: considering how shit people can be, especially when given power, and how recent developments have hopefully made it easier to speak out about certain types of behaviour, it was maybe only a matter of time before some artist I greatly respected was revealed to be a major piece of shit.
Presumably in hindsight some people will point to some of Lindemanns dodgier lyrics and claim that it should always have been obvious he was going to be a sex offender. I don't think I agree with that. It should be possible to describe evil for the sake of art without yourself being evil and furthermore it should also be possible to have bad thoughts without acting upon them. If not, humanity is surely doomed, but I don't want to be that pessimistic.
That leaves the songs themselves. I have enjoyed many of these and found a lot of beauty in them since highschool. I understand that context sometimes makes you view art in a new light. Maybe it differs on a case-by-case basis whether it's possible to separate the art from the artist, but whenever it is possible, which is something people will have to judge for themselves, I believe it is right to do so, because the world will simply become a lot uglier if we relate everything to the worst aspects of humanity. In this case I don't think I will suddenly not appreciate them anymore, considering how often I have listened to these without ever getting bored.
Group 5:
Ghost Love Score - 3 It's such an superhuman gigantic enormous piece of music. Some might find it over the top/pretentious, but I'm just a sucker for this kind of stuff.
Sonne - 2
Mondscheinsonate - 1
Group 6: Way too strong as mentioned.
Knights of Cydonia - 3
The Universal - 2
Master of Puppets - 1
HMs: Child in Time, Enjoy the Silence (both of these would have gotten points in every other group so far)

1 - Aaron Copeland - Fanfare for the Common Man
GROUP 6
3 - Blur - The Universal (this is the first time I've disagreed with a version in TMT20. 2012 from Hyde Park, can't be beat. So I voted it top of my list based on that)
2 - Deep Purple - Child in Time
1 - Depeche Model - Enjoy the Silence
Group 5
1 Aerosmith - Same old Song and Dance
2 Foo Fighters - Everlong
3 Larry Fleet - Where I Find God
GROUP 6
1 Depeche Model - Enjoy the Silence
3 Metallica - Master of Puppets

3. Foo Fighters - Everlong
2. Ludwig von Beethoven - Mondscheinsonate, 3rd movement
1. Rammstein - Sonne
GROUP 6 (The most stacked group of this edition so far, but not quite 2023TMT20's first official stack alert. Extremely hard to rank these three.)
3. Blur - The Universal
2. Queen - Killer Queen
1. Deep Purple - Child In Time
HMs: Knights of Cydonia (easily worth 3 in the other group, but I ran out of points), and Boogie Wonderland.

Thanks.

A few observations before we wrap up Round 1:
- I will define the "Disappointment Index" of a group as the total PPV awarded to songs that were eliminated (remember that each voter gets six total points in Round 1). Group 8 has a remarkably low Disappointment Index of only 0.875, and it is the only group for which it is less than 1. Group 3 has the highest so far at 2.
- We have somehow not needed any of the tiebreakers yet for determining which songs will advance.

Interesting stats.
To me it seems like round 2 was pretty rough last year, with a lot of personal favourites getting eliminated and ending up in this round 1. At the same time there have been quite a number of awesome new nominations, including some nice discoveries, this year, so this may have been one of the strongest rounds 1 we've ever had. Even so, while there were a couple minor dissapointments, I'm quite happy with the results so far. I suppose that means round 2 is going to be very strong as well.
Group 9 is gonna be another difficult group to vote on. I immediately would like to give points to at least six of these songs...

Group 10 Weakest group this round tbh
The Mercy Seat - 3
Where Are Your Kids Tonight - 2 (another nice discovery!)
My Body is a Cage - 1 (I have mixed feelings about this one. It's an interesting version and obviously it worked really well in Dark and House. However, I'm just really attached to the original by Arcade Fire, esp because of the organ.)

We will vote on groups two at a time (although you can vote on only one of the groups if you want). Each voting period will last three days (72 hours). Votes cast after that will not be accepted, with the exception that we will always keep going until we have at least three votes per group.
Give your top four songs 4, 3, 2, and 1 points, respectively. You must give points to exactly three or four songs (awarding the 1-point vote is optional).

All these R2 groups kinda feel strong but balanced. Even the R1 groups were mostly like that, with the exception of a couple of weak groups. I'm kinda surprised at the absence of true stacks so far (inb4 one of the remaining R2 groups proves me wrong). Looking at how songs are laid out in pools, though, I think the likelihood of any of the remaining group having more than four personal favourites is kinda low, so luckily I don't think I'll have to leave further must-votes at 0.

Quote from: Sir Lüc on August 15, 2023, 10:45:11 AMI'm kinda surprised at the absence of true stacks so far (inb4 one of the remaining R2 groups proves me wrong)
why did i even say that
group 7 is so massive a stack they had to bring in a forklift to carry it, and group 8 is so weak that it basically guarantees a similar (but likely not as massive) stack in either of the remaining groups :(
Group 7...it hurt to choose one over the other. And then choose yet another over the first choice. For group 8 I contemplated just awarding points to three, and I felt even that was stretching it, but rules are rules.

Talossa-related trivia: I was given the Nickelback album "Silver Side Up" by a citizen residing in Canada, most likely in 2001, because a record store clerk recommended it as it was "popular". I don't remember who gave it to me, but I have it on a shelf somewhere. Could be because I distributed mix tapes with the name "Back Page Tape" at the time, and I got something in return. it's long ago and I'm old, so I don't remember, ok? 😂 I can't really claim to have listened to it since 2001 though.

Thanks.

** From Special Edition
Of the 25 new nominations that entered Round 2, only 8 are moving on to Round 3. Enjoy the Silence is the only song remaining from the Special Edition. Last year, only three new nominations got to Round 3.
Five of last year's Top 20 were eliminated in Round 2, the highest ranked being The Sound of Silence (#11).
Take the virtual standings with a grain of salt; last year's eventual winner (as well as #4 and #5) were not in last year's virtual Top 10 after Round 2.

TMT20 ROUND 3 - GROUPS 1, 2, AND 3
Round 3 consists of five groups of ten songs each. The top five songs from each group advance according to the flowchart above. Groups are drawn randomly in such a way that each group contains two 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place songs from Round 2.
We will vote on groups 1, 2, and 3 and then groups 4 and 5.

Is this on the wiki? We need to start memorializing some of these years-long traditions.
All three groups are varying degrees of strong to me, and no doubt at least one of 4 and 5 will be strong too. I thought the toughest choice was in group 2, but group 3 turned out to be much more difficult to vote on. Group 1 also has a few personal favourites that I doubt will make it through.
So carnage is coming, but at this stage of the tournament that's pretty much inevitable, as personal favourites have a tougher time against stronger popular picks, when the field narrows down and especially when a fair number survived this far.

The difference between #1 and #6 in each group was always at least 8 points, except in Group 1, where it was only 3 points.
Three of the eight new nominations that made it to Round 3 (Enjoy the Silence, Wish You Were Here, and How Soon is Now) are now guaranteed a spot in the Top 20. The rest were eliminated. Last year, all three of the new nominations in Round 3 were eliminated, although two of those three (Blue Monday and Der Kommissar) have now advanced this year.
Six of last year's Top 20 were eliminated in Round 3, including last year's #3 (The Chain) and #4 (On the River).
Seven of the 22 songs on the Virtual Top 20 by Round 2 PPV were eliminated. The most popular Round 2 songs to be eliminated were The Chain and Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors (both with 1.75 PPV in R2 but less than 1.00 PPV in R3).
TMT20 Round 4
Round 4 consists of one group of ten songs (the 4th and 5th place songs from each of the five groups of Round 3). The top five songs advance to Round 5 and earn a spot in the Top 20.
The voting period will last three days (72 hours). Votes cast after that will not be accepted, with the exception that we will always keep going until we have at least three votes per group.
Give your top four songs 4, 3, 2, and 1 points, respectively. You must give points to exactly three or four songs (awarding the 1-point vote is optional).

Thanks.

All five songs to make it through were either in the Top 20 or were eliminated in Round 4 last year, while all five songs to be eliminated were eliminated before Round 4 last year.
It's been a few years since the TMT20 had a formatting change, so we're overdue for one. Nothing major, I promise.
I've always thought Round 5 lacked the dignity it deserves. After all, all of the songs it in have already made the Top 20, but here we are voting just like we have in Rounds 1-4.
I am rebranding Round 5 as the SEMI-FINALS. A few new rules:
- DO NOT POST YOUR VOTE HERE. Send me your vote in private (just like for the Finals).
- Introducing the 5-point vote. Give points to exactly five songs (5, 4, 3, 2, 1).
- Voting will last one week.
- Results (except for which five songs advance to the final) will not be announced ahead of the final results reveal.
Paranoid Android back in the final for the first time since 2017! Very deserved for such a beautiful song.
Amazingly strong semifinal. Strongest group so far (and we've gotten some pretty stacked groups already).

I like the rebranding of round 5 as semifinal.
Although tbh I wonder if we need round 5 at all. Round 3, 4, 5, final are all just voting on the same couple of songs, which has felt somewhat redundant for a while now and we've often seen people miss out on rounds 4 and 5 in the past. Maybe next year we could just have a 20 song final. Moving to a 15 song from 10 didnt cause any problems at all so I think people can handle a 20 song group. Or alternatively rounds 4 and 5 could be combined into a 15 song semifinal where not all songs make the list?

I do kinda worry this voting key is very harsh on personal favourites / love-hate songs in favour of songs that everybody kinda likes. That might potentially reduce diversity in the final a bit.
Anyway, the new fancy semifinal deserves its own spotify playlist:

We have a full week now, so a good opportunity to listen to all the songs again before voting.
(Ian hasn't actually posted the songs yet, but I assume it's gonna be these 10)

I totally agree, more selective votes will give more interesting results. In Music, Passion is better than Consensus !
Maybe 6-4-3-2-1 or something similar might be an interesting intermediate variant, where we do expand the number of songs you have to give votes to but dont cut down on the points given to favourites too much.
Edit:
Or 10-7-5-3-1?
For comparison, votes given to first place:
4321 - 40%
107531 - 38.5%
64321 - 37,5%
54321 - 33,3%
Of course its up to Ian to decide. Just some ideas.

I've been thinking some more about ways of restructuring the last few rounds for next year and came up with two alternatives. Please let me know what you think:
OPTION 1
-Top two songs from each Round 3 group automatically advance to the Final
-Next three songs from each group go the Semifinal (one group of 15). Of these:
- Top five advance to the Final
- Next five are #16 - #20
- Last five are eliminated
-Final has 15 songs
OPTION 2
-Winner of each of Round 3 group automatically advances to the Grand Final
-Next four songs from each group go the Semifinal (two groups of 10). Of these:
- Top 5 advance to the Grand Final
- Bottom 5 go to the Small Final
- Grand Final has 15 songs (#1 - #15)
- Small Final has 10 songs
- Top 5 are #16 - #20
- Bottom 5 are eliminated

I prefer Option 1.. Small Finals offer no real interest as stakes are low imho.
Why not combine next TMT with a competition of pronostics on the winning songs ?
I prefer option 1 as well
Option 1 is better.

Sadly I might have to miss the ending then. Need to work tomorrow

We were discussing yesterday the possibility of retiring songs that are always very successful, especially now that Gimme Shelter has won three of the past four contests.
I think what we could do is retire songs that place in the Top 10 three times and replace them with another song by the same artist. We could determine which song in a preliminary round of voting before the main event.
By my count, the following songs would be retired before next year under this criterion:
Bon Jovi - You Give Love a Bad Name
Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down to Georgia
David Bowie - Starman
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Dire Straits - Telegraph Road
*Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen and David Bowie - Under Pressure
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
*Would not be replaced as it was already eliminated in a prior year.
Let me know what you think.

I like that idea. Put the repeat winners in a "Hall of Fame."

Some thoughts:
If we decide to kick songs upstairs perhaps it should be limited to songs that actually won. It feels unfair for a song to be forever without a chance of winning because they got close a couple of times. In such cases it would almost be preferable for a song to finish outside the top 10 in a year where they are not likely to win. It would make sense for a hall of fame to contain the songs that won tmt20.
Im not sure the suggested replacement is a good idea. Already the final rounds are a bit stale because we have several classic rock doubles. Obviously there is a reason these songs do well but wouldn't the point of removing songs be to create some room for some new things. Do we immediately need to fill that room with another Queen and another Stones and another Dire Straits? (I say as someone who frequently gives many points to all three of these artists.)
Preliminary rounds for artists sounds fun though!
Maybe we could take that idea a step further (I realise this will be controversial)
The first round is usually really diverse with lots of different kind of picks but towards the final rounds we gravitate towards the artists on which there is the most common ground. I do think that tends to make the final rounds a bit stale, especially because some artists are represented several times.
Perhaps we could do a limit of one song per artist.
A way this could work is:
- Regular nominations can only be used for songs by artists that haven't been nominated yet. However in addition to regular nominations everyone can also nominate one additional song by an artist that has already been nominated. This doesnt affect the number of free spots.
- Before Round 1 we then have a round 0 with one group (or more likely, pair) per artist where we determine what song will represent that artist.
- If a song that was automatically nominated for round 2 loses in round 0, the new song by that artist will also start in round 2. However, in such cases, the song that was replaced will automatically be nominated for round 0 the next year.
- In case of collaborations the song counts for the main artist (so Under Pressure counts as a Queen song). Artists who've gone solo after being in a band don't count as the same artist, but covering their own band is an exception (so While My Guitar Gently Weeps would count as a Beatles song). Obviously that exception wouldnt apply to completely unrelated artists doing a cover.
- The first year this applies all artists with multiple songs automatically nominated will have to do round 0. This means there are more spots for new nominations. If an artist has multiple automatic round 2 nominations the extra spots will be filled by the best performing round 2 eliminations last year.
- Songs that lose round 0 can of course be renominated next year
- Potential voting keys for round 0 could be 1 for a group of 2, 3-1 for a group of 3, 2-1 for a group of 4, 4-2-1 for a group of 5, 3-2-1 for a group of 6.
Obviously a lot of great songs would be eliminated because of this rule (Round 0 for Radiohead or Rush would be horrible), but it does create a lot of space for interesting new songs, especially in the later rounds and it creates a short fun new round at the beginning.

I was thinking something similar. How about retiring songs that have won and have placed somewhere in the Top 20 at least three times?
As for your other suggestion, I can see the merit in not automatically nominating another song by the same artist, although I don't think I really like the proposed Round 0.
Can't wait for the 2024 edition (if there will be one)
Quote from: Ian Plätschisch on March 02, 2024, 08:54:36 PMAs for your other suggestion, I can see the merit in not automatically nominating another song by the same artist, although I don't think I really like the proposed Round 0.
I agree. If the process gives me a headache, I'm not immediately positive. If certain artists tend to be nominated multiple times, then perhaps those in particular should be addressed instead of doing that extra round? Like a total number of songs in the current top 20 + nominations. That total being 2, for example.
As far as retiring is concerned, I think I agree with retiring after three times, but perhaps top 10? I haven't followed the TMT20 for long, so perhaps 20 is better. I like it in principle though, regardless.
