Anyone up for a Talossan chess tournament, to be held over the course of 2024?
Participating is more important than winning - being good at chess not required.
Time format: 15 minutes with 10 second increment (maybe?)
More details to follow.
I'm interested. Not a good player but will have fun.
Very interested.
I'll never miss an opportunity to be ridiculous, of course I'm in !
Count me in.
My problem with time-controlled games is that I panic and can't think. My problem with daily games is that it takes so long that I stop caring.
So I'm pretty much bad no matter what.
I'd be interested, though I honestly think 15+10 is way too slow...
I'm a patzer myself, but I'm trying to improve. I'd probably join in.
Nice to see so much interest.
Deadline for registering will be February 11th!!!
Plenty of time will be provided for players to plan and have their match, so expect this to go on for a while, even if we only do 5 rounds.
The preferred platform will be lichess (because its free, doesnt do ads and doesnt sell your data), but players can agree on any alternative. Instructions to create a lichess account will be provided.
The tournament setup will depend on the number of players, but if we have more than 6-8 I will probably use an app to set up a swiss tournament (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss-system_tournament). (Don't worry too much about the details. I will just say who has to play who and with what colour.)

Quote from: Marcel Eðo Pairescu Tafial, UrGP on December 21, 2023, 08:10:47 PMI'd be interested, though I honestly think 15+10 is way too slow...
Why is that?
My worry is that for players who only know the rules and not much else, faster time controls may be intimidating and not result in interesting games because people might just make random moves in panic.
I absolutely suck at chess. My five year old nephew taught himself to play from watching cartoons, and beat me on our first match. Me, who had studied Bobby Fisher's book and "the Complete Idiots Guide to Chess", got beat by a self-taught five year old. Anyhow, count me in. (The only game I'm good at is Othello. If you could create an Othello tournament, I'd probably beat you all!) (Maybe not, but I'd love the challenge!)
Just registered as btzara on lichess.
Looking forward to showing just how bad I am in chess soon...
I'm on Lichess now too. BenPuntmasleu is my username.
Three more weeks to register. I'm gonna assume everyone who expressed interest here is participating (other than Braneu sadly) unless told otherwise.
I will join in, just registered with lichess as xpbcz
Just done also for me (and my cat), user : tgerxh
Registered, user name is Taiwos. (And apparently I made an account on lichess back in 2017, and have absolutely no memory of doing so, or why)
I could try. I absolutely suck in chess but the tournament seems like fun. Please keep my timezone in mind (CET/CEST | Central European Time/Central European Summer Time)
I haven't played against humans since the 80s (and against Mittens a few times recently just to make a fool of myself), so of course I'm in. Username gjehigra.

Default platform: Lichess (May be altered with mutual consent, preferably to a physical chess board.)
Some clarifications:
Tournament format
We're doing a swiss tournament, which basically means winners play winners and losers play losers (of course the first round is random).
However there are some complications - like players not meeting twice, there not always being even groups of players with the same number of points, a preference for players switching colours, etc - that make assigning the pairings manually a bit too complex, so I'm using a site for the pairings, in this case swissonlinetournament.com. I don't know the exact algorithm used, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere.
There will be 5 rounds played, which should usually be enough to determine a winner. It means you won't play all players, but you will be likely to face the players that are around your level towards the end.
Scheduling your match
Basically it is up to you to contact your assigned opponent and schedule your match. Keep in mind time zone differences. This might mean that if you live in Cape Town and your opponent lives in Melbourne, you might have to get up early whereas your opponent might have to stay up late.
I've provided a deadline. This should be plenty of time, but of course if you have a good reason (for example you happen to be going on vacation for three weeks) an extension will be granted, provided this was communicated to me. If a match remains unplayed and it turns out one player has tried to schedule a match whereas the other player has been unresponsive and not asked for an extension the active player wins by default.
No reason to wait until the deadline of course. The sooner you send a pm to your opponent asking to schedule your match the better,
Platform
You are free to use whatever platform you agree on with your opponent, but if you can't agree on a platform the default will be lichess.org, which I like because it runs on donations and doesn't steal your data. If you have questions about how to use lichess please let me know.
Of course, if you are able to physically meet and play on an actual board with an actual chess clock, please do! (Ideally do record your game as well in that case.
Time format
The time format used will be 10 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move, which means a game should usually last between 15 and 30 minutes. However, if you and your opponent both agree on a different format that's fine. Don't go crazy though. No ultrahyperbullet or stuff like that please.
Results
Once you have your result please post it here, ideally with a link to the game so we can all have a look at what happened.
(Actually if you have agreed on a time, if you want you can post it here as well along with your lichess account so people might be able to watch along live.)
Outside assistance
Chess engines, tablebase, opening books, help from a friend, etc, during your game, are obviously all BANNED. Don't do it. It's all for fun anyway. No cheating...
If there are any questions about the rules please let me know.
Acknowledged thanks for organizing!

That was just a warm-up loss. I'll try to be a little harder to beat for my next opponent. (Throws chess books in the trash)
Stupid question as I've never used Lichess for anything but computer games before (and only briefly), and I feel there's something obvious that I'm missing when I'm looking at the site. Can I set up the game ahead of time?
Quote from: Gjermund Higraff on February 18, 2024, 02:16:20 PMStupid question as I've never used Lichess for anything but computer games before (and only briefly), and I feel there's something obvious that I'm missing when I'm looking at the site. Can I set up the game ahead of time?
Basically you challenge someone either by clicking "play with a friend" or by going to their profile and clicking the challenge button and then clicking what side you are suppose to play (after putting in the correct settings). Using the first method you then get a link to send or you can fill in their profile name.
The game starts when they accept the challenge.
I don't really know how long a challenge lasts before it expires. I imagine you probably can't set it up a very long time in advance, but not sure.
If anyone has trouble with the game settings on lichess:
variant: standard
time control: real time
minutes: 10 (unless you made other agreements)
increment: 5 (unless you made other agreements)
casual/rated: I'd probably go with casual unless youve agreed with your opponent to play rated. It doesn't really matter.
And then pick the icon with the colour you're supposed to play.

It looks like we're up next (spoiler). I have a suspicion that's not gonna be easy for me.
First round finished. I hope everyone enjoyed playing, regardless of the outcome. As mentioned, the algorithm prefers matchups between players at the same standing. Of course, since there were 5 winners and 5 losers that's not possible so there is one matchup between someone who won and someone who lost last round.

Oh no. I see now we're over the deadline already. Oh well.
Quote from: Gjermund Higraff on March 23, 2024, 02:35:09 PMOh no. I see now we're over the deadline already. Oh well.
Don't tell anyone, but the deadline really just exists to encourage people to plan their matches quickly, or to provide a way forward if it becomes clear a match just isn't gonna happen anytime soon or at all. If you play your match tomorrow I'm obviously not gonna kick you out of the tournament. That wouldn't really be helpful or fun for anyone. Good luck to both of you tomorrow!
Probably my mistake, but I tried to set up a game but couldn't figure it out 😂 I didn't get an invite either, so I assume my opponent is as experienced with lichess as I am. I need to leave for a few hours now anyway, so I think I have to be DQ'd.
Play with a friend -> Standard, real time, 10, 5, casual -> button with the colour you are playing -> copy the link OR search for your opponents name.
If you can manage to play your game today or in the coming days there's no need for a DQ
I won't be able to schedule anything early this week, so no chance, I'm afraid.
Gjermund and Bentxami have indicated to me that they are withdrawing from the tournament.
That means the second round is now finished. We continue the next round with 8 players. I suggest because of this we reduce the number of rounds to 4, so two more rounds, and then maybe a round of tiebreakers if we want to.

@Marcel Eðo Pairescu Tafial, UrGP @xpb It looks like you will both end on 3 points, but you haven't played each other. Do you want to do a tiebreak or are you happy just being joint second? It's up to you, but it could be an interesting game I think. I could randomly assign colours if you want.

(If Ian and Tgerxh want to do a playoff for 4th place Id suggest Tgerxh plays white because last game it was the other way round.)
we are set to play Sunday
XPB 0 - 1 Tafial

Taiwos 1 - 0 Tzaracomprada
