Title: [Terpelaziun] Minister of Immigration (June 3)
Post by: Breneir Tzaracomprada on May 28, 2025, 12:41:12 PM
Mr. Speaker,

This enquiry is for the Immigration Minister @Miestră Schivă, UrN-GC

I recall the following answer from the Deputy Minister here:

Quote from: Miestră Schivă, UrN-GC on May 17, 2025, 05:14:18 PMI will ask the Deputy Minister @Iac Éovard Valadeir to speak to this directly

EDIT: And here it is:

"Between increased work hours, finals, and preparing for college, I'll admit that I've bitten off more than I could chew. However, rest assured I have no intentions of abandoning talossa or the responsibilities I have to it"

The slow trickle of immigration is now a trend that is entrenched unfortunately over the past couple of terms. The idea of an applicant shepherd, of sorts, as the Deputy was supposed to have served, is a good one but I note no improvement in his activities since the reply. And based on the list of responsibilities: work hours, finals, and then college it seems like the workload could be considerable into the forseeable future. But the need for heightened assistance with immigration remains.

How does the Minister plan to respond to continued inability to perform the duties by the Deputy, however regrettable, to meet this very important and pressing function?

Esteemed Túischac'h, it is this Government's policy to encourage brand new citizens to take part in Government. Brand new citizens sometimes need their hands held to do so, or they may be slow to start. The prime example in Cabinet has been the Attorney-General, who has been doing a fantastic job, but might have already quit in shame if he had been expected to be au fait with Talossan judicial traditions from the get-go.

I know that the member has a track record where harassment is concerned, but public naming/shaming of a brand new citizen getting used to their first government job will not have the desired effect. That is, if the desired effect is to encourage the citizen in performance of that job; rather than to "just be a verpă". We have too many examples of heavy-handed criticism in Talossa driving people out of participation altogether.

The Cabinet will discuss whether multiple Deputy Ministers of Immigration may be helpful in this regard, but we are going to continue giving a newbie a chance.

Mr. Speaker,

I'll ignore the apparent argument that an Opposition member conducting oversight of government inactivity, especially regarding the vital area of immigration, is harassment. It's a cheap, juvenile diversion. Speaking of those, I do look forward to voting for the historic censure motion concerning my penchant for compliments. I remind the Minister that the task we are discussing was defined and agreed to by this Government not by myself in their description of the Deputy Minister's duties. And that the simple task we are discussing is not equivalent to learning Talossa's legal system.

Mr. Speaker, this supplementary question is for the Minister of Immigration. Who will be conducting the duties of the Deputy Minister should he continue to be unavailable?

Estimat Túischac'h, the question of the future of the role of "Immigration greeter" has been put to Cabinet for discussion. We note that previous incarnations of this function, including the "TalossAssistant" program, fell by the wayside, for the same reason many things do nowadays: no-one wants to do the work, and calling for volunteers doesn't help.

Estimat Túischac'h, may I also wholeheartedly endorse the comments of my colleague the Foreign Minister, made elsewhere, and express regret that under Talossa's electoral system, there is no way anyone prepared to vote for themselves can fail to get a Cosă seat, no matter how much of a verpă they are.

Mr. Speaker,

I learned my Verpă-ness from Miestra, so, uh, thanks? I'll be in touch next month.
