Yes, it is in fact time for another Talossa chess tournament! Open to everyone from beginners to complete amateurs.
What
A Talossan online chess tournament. Four or five rounds (depending on the number of players), followed by a 3-game final for the first and second placed players.
Previous edition (https://wittenberg.talossa.com/index.php?topic=2944.msg25269#msg25269)
Where
Wherever you want, but unless you and your opponent agree on an alternative venue the default will be lichess.org. Creating an account is free, simple, and doesn't require you to submit all sorts of personal information.*
When
Second half of 2025. Registration deadline is July 1st. Each rounds will take roughly a month. Within each month, each players is responsible for scheduling their game with their opponent, picking whatever date+time is most suitable.
How
Register by posting in this thread or letting me know by other means before July first!
The tournament will be created using https://swissonlinetournament.com/, which I will use to generate the matchups. The format will a swiss tournament, which (oversimplified) means players are matched with players that won the same amount of games so far.** The default time format will be 10+5, but players may agree to use a different time control. Detailed instructions for setting up your game in lichess will follow.
Sounds nice, but I'm terrible at chess
Based on the previous edition, so are the rest of us. The swiss format makes it more likely that you will play against opponents of similar strength towards the end of the tournament. It's just for fun, don't worry!
Cool, but will I have enough time for that
It's four or five 30 minute games, spread out over 6 months. There should be plenty of time to plan your games.
Yes, but I'm going on a month-long holiday to a remote island without internet
This doesn't need to be a problem, we can maybe shift the deadlines for rounds. But you should let me know in advance so we can find a solution.
*The organisation is in no way affiliated with lichess and is not sponsored or in any way or form paid for the organisation or for saying this.
**The organisation however reserves the right to exclude certain pairings in order to keep the tournament enjoyable for everyone.

Meh, I'll have a go.
¡Partiçiparhéu!
Count me in
I'd like to participate.
I'm in
sure, why not?
Count me in also!
I have a question: how is the tournament structure going to work with an odd number of participants?
That is an excellent question, and also a reason Im hoping we will get one (or three or five) more participant(s) 😅
Im happy to leave the registration open just a while longer until we get a 10th participant. If we really cant find anyone who's interested I will think about a format that works for 9 players.
The 8 of us can compete to be the Challenger in front of last year's winner, America Cup style!
Ok last call for registering. If don't have an even number of players by tuesdayafternoon we will go with þerxh's suggestion
Apparently there is a way of having a Swiss-style tournament with an odd number of players (the lowest seed / score gets a bye for that round, no repeats). I guess we can do that instead.
Quote from: FIDE Handbook C.04.01c. Should the number of players to be paired be odd, one player is unpaired. This player receives a pairing-allocated bye: no opponent, no colour and as many points as are rewarded for a win, unless the rules of the tournament state otherwise.
d. A player who has already received a pairing-allocated bye, or has already scored a (forfeit) win due to an opponent not appearing in time, shall not receive the pairing-allocated bye.

Ok registrations are closed. We are going with Marcel's plan (apparently the bye thing is build in in the tournament generator anyway).
I will create the tournament using the following settings on https://swissonlinetournament.com:
Playsystem: Swiss Dutch Fide (JavaFo)
Points per game: 1-0,0-1,0.5-0.5
Bye value: win
Total rounds: 5 (realistically 4 or even 3 would be enough, but I want players with a bye to play at least 4 games, because playing chess is the whole point.)
The site is just for generating the pairings. I will post them here so no need for players to log in there or anything like that.

Will post instructions soon-ish
Ok, Talossachess 2025 has started! Thanks to everyone who registered.
How to proceed:
Step 1. Contact your opponent to plan your game. You can see who your opponent is in the post above. Contact them to discuss what date and time suits both of you for playing your game. I'm not gonna start with deadlines for now, because that only caused confusion last time, but try to plan at the earliest opportunity.
When you scheduled a date you can post it here, so we have some idea of when the round is gonna end (and also maybe some specators might show up).
Step 2. Create a lichess account (if you don't have one).
You don't have to play your game on lichess, but it is recommended. If you don't have an account yet, you can go to lichess.org -> sign in -> register. It's free. There is also a mobile app you can use, but I prefer to use the browser version on my laptop.
Let your opponent know your lichess name so you can set up the game.
Step 3. Set up your game. When the scheduled time have arrive, to set up your game login on lichess.org. On the browser version click on "play with a friend" on the right side of the screen and you should get the following menu:
Capture.PNG
Use the following settings:
Variant: Standard
Time Control: Real Time
Minutes per side: 10*
Increment in seconds: 5*
Casual **
and then click the black crown if YOU are playing black and the white crown if YOU are playing white. (You can check whether you are supposed to play black or white in the post above this one)
* Time format is recommended. If you and your opponent both agree on a different format that is ok.
** If you wanted to play rated thats fine too. It just means the game will affect your lichess rating. Doesn't really matter tbh.
You then enter this screen:
Capture.PNG
As you can see there are several options, but the best option is to just fill in your opponents username in the searchbar under "Or invite a lichess user". Once you click on their name the other person will receive a challenge which they can accept to start your game.
Of course in the mobile app this will look different
Step 4 Beat your opponentStep 5 Post your result on this thread.GOOD LUCK!

With apologies, I believe it would be best to forfeit my games, including my current one against Glüc. Just can't really expect people to be down to play on a day's notice or less.
Mayhaps could match people on a bye against my would-be opponents?

I don't think that is the case - you can arrange a game when it works as it said above "I'm not gonna start with deadlines for now"
Fwiw, I wouldn't have minded playing Iac at short notice, but yes, there should be plenty of time to plan your games when convenient.
If Iac wishes to withdraw, I will play Lüc instead. That means there won't be any byes in future rounds, so we can probably do four rounds instead of five.

I screwed up on move 20 on my phone and put my rook too far but was allowed to do a take back by my opponent. thus I think this actually should be scored a draw
I feel like I lost fair and square, although if Sir Pol would like to propose a draw, then who am I to decline?

I request the tournament director to score this a draw as both sides agree.

Yes, me and Bråneu are currently negotiating a good time for our match, probably on Wednesday (Talossa time)

Nevermind, the game is happening right now (https://lichess.org/4unnN1VL).
EDIT: Excelsio 0-1 Tafial
He's a great player, I even challenged him to a 3+0 (the ones I play probably 40-50 games a week) and got beat as well haha, nice games!
Tgerxh and I have played our game: https://lichess.org/1eF5KBFR/white#70

Nice games!
Here's the draw for round 2:

Good game! According to the engine it was basically a draw until move 34, but then it went wrong because I was able to start pushing.
S:reu Autófil and I just finished our game, one point for Excelsio, this is the link:
