Title: [URL Convention] Debate on Party Symbols & Branding
Post by: Mic’haglh Autófil, O.Be on July 22, 2025, 11:36:33 AM
At the request of the Provisional Convention Chair, I'm opening a discussion on the party's symbols/colors/branding.

I have a few main design concepts, though I've created quite a few for the PdR over the years if anyone wants to see some of the more "out-there" ideas.

(https://i.imgur.com/ZOchKYh.png)     (https://i.imgur.com/ftZ34Zf.png)

My thoughts here:
- Both the FreeDems and PdR used stars in their logo, so something continuing to use a star seemed like an obvious choice. The PdR star had eight points for eight provinces, while the FreeDem inverted star had five; I've played with both numbers here.
- Colors used are the blue by the PdR and the "orange-red" used by the FreeDems. The first image uses the actual orange-red shade that seems to be used on the wiki, but if we wanted something a little less visually-harsh, the rest of them use a shade that is just the RGB average of "two parts Bicoloreu Red, one part gold" from my Talossan color palette.
- Wordmark is pretty straightforward, the second 'U' is supposed to look a little like it's a ribbon that's blue on one side and orange-red on the other.

If anyone else has any other suggestions, ideas, or feedback, the floor is open.

Could you maybe reconsider picking the exact same party colours as those of the former Moderate Radicals? I know it's been a while, but there's people to which these colours still mean something dear, even if it's probably just me and Glüc nowadays.

(Plus, it's still a major political party with a colour palette distinct from any other major party before and since, so it would be weird if a later major party with no relationship to the former just swooped in and copied them)

We had already noticed the similarity, even if inadvertent; keep in mind that none of these are anywhere close to official and ideally this thread will produce some other options on palette that we can play around with before settling on one.

Just some quick ideas if we wanted to make sure we're not reusing another (unrelated) party's color scheme. We could go with blue and red:

- Blue from not just the PdR, but the Liberal Congress (one of the two parties that merged to form the Free Democrats)
- Red from the ZRT, the other FreeDem predecessor party; this merger likely pulls the party a little more in a ZRT direction anyway. Red, when used on the national flag, represents the Talossan people and their tenacity, which feels fitting for the pro-democracy, pro-reform party.

More than half of the ModRad leadership ended up in the FreeDems at one stage or another :D But your point is taken

As a freakin' communist, I found myself getting inspired by the UNION aspects of the name, and I have a sneaking fondness for this old logo of the US Socialist Labor Party

Putting a few of these that have at least gotten some support elsewhere for public comment:

Should also point out that the "Horizon Swoop" logo (top-center, above) had at least one member comment in support.

May not be a bad time to decide on how we want to go about a color scheme; keep it "two distinct colors working together", or blend them into one? The purple used on the keystone is the average of the blue and red hues; the blue and "orange-red" come out to a shade very close to that used by Avant!. In my opinion, this would imply sticking to a separate colors would be a better idea, but I want to hear what other people think. The drawback there is deciding on which is the "primary".

I like the red-blue-white scheme.  Leave out the purple.

So overall, these are the only logos that anyone has referenced liking specifically:

I think we've had enough feedback that we can move to a vote between them. URL members are hereby asked to submit a Ranked-Choice vote for the following, as shown left-to-right above:

Party members are also invited to express a preference between red and blue as to which color the party should use as its primary color (use on the wiki, Cosa seat diagrams, etc.); the other will be secondary.

Voting will last 72 hours, until 4:45 PM Talossan Time, Tuesday, August 5th.

For my part:
- Option 1
- Option 3
- Option 2
Color preference: blue (I think it's a better "break" to show the new era, personally)

And I personally prefer red as the party colour

Neutral on party colour. You might note that the main opposition party has chosen purple, so it's much of a muchness either way. I don't think the FreeDems ever had our own colour.

Not "orange-red"? Just a "customary" color as opposed to an official one then, I take it.

That was I think Lüc, or whoever wrote the Wiki pages, chose that to represent us. None of our doing.

Guilty as charged. I think orangered rather than full-on red was picked because it seemed appropriate to tell it apart from the ZRT and the TSP, which were both red in the 47th and 48th Cosa respectively, and to mark the presence of the former Liberal caucus.

Additionally, the FreeDems and the RUMP both had logos with the colours of the Talossan flag, so when I had to pick one for each, it seemed weird to give the monarchists red and not green (which also neatly doubled as kind of the natural color of their mascot, the turtle).

I am clueless on things like this.  I will probably vote to abstain. - GV

With all first-choice ballots cast for Option 1, it has been adopted as the logo of the URL.
