tldr: NOMINATE 1, 2, or 3 categories that you would like to see in this year's special edition.
Introduction
As TMT master
@Sir Ian Plätschisch has pointed out, it's been three years since we've had a special TMT edition. Special editions are usually held when there's two general elections in a year, so there is a big gap between regular editions.
In a special edition, unlike in regular TMT editions we don't make an overall top 20, but we select the most popular song in six specific categories, allowing us to take a deeper dive into different genres, instruments, lyrical themes, countries of origin, time periods, etc and bring some diversity into TMT as the best song in each category that hasn't been nominated for TMT before will automatically be nominated for the next regular editions. In the past many special edition winners have reached the final of the regular edition.
CategoriesSo basically the format will be the same as the 2023 special edition.
The first order of business will be to select 5 of the 6 categories. This will be done using a modified version of STV. The sixth category, as is tradition, will be songs released since the previous TMT special edition.
There are a couple of rules with regards to categories.
* The following categories were already used in the two previous editions:
- Christmas music
- Classical music to have dinner to in the last day of Earth
- Comedy music
- Electronic Music
- Eurovision nominated songs
- Songs released on or after October 30th, 2019
- Movie Theme Songs
- Country Songs (excluding Johnny Cash)
- Songs with female lead vocals
- Songs to play while overthrowing the government
- German language songs
- Songs released in 2018/2019
These categories are off-limits (of course there can be some overlap, but preferably not too similar as there are still many to explore that we haven't done before).
* Categories can't be too common in regular TMT20. For example: "English language songs" or "Classic rock" might have been good categories, but if you look at the songs that actually made the Talossan Music Top 20, many of those would fall in both these categories, which defeats the point of the special edition. For reference: https://wiki.talossa.com/Talossan_Music_Top_20
* Categories can't be too niche. For example: "Music from Liechtenstein" may or may not be very interesting, but nobody is gonna be able to nominate songs for this category. We're gonna have to select categories where several participants are gonna be able to come up with at least 25 different songs.
* There can't be too much overlap. For example if someone nominates "Italian language songs" as a category and somebody else nominates "Songs from Italy", these will for a large part be the same songs, so if that happens one of these categories cannot be selected.
NOMINATE 1, 2, or 3 categories that you would like to see in this year's special edition. Deadline: August 30th, so in exactly 14 days from now.
Already selected categories (1/6)
- Songs released on or after February 2nd, 2023 (The day nominations opened for the recent songs category in the previous TMTSpecial)

Talossan Music Top 20 overview (https://wiki.talossa.com/Talossan_Music_Top_20)
Can we have 'covers of original songs' as a category ?
And songs with less than 5000 listenings on Spotify
Plus songs in invented language
(Rephrasing welcome !)
My first try at nominating categories:
1. Songs that include unusual time signatures
2. Songs with twin guitars
3. Songs about historical events
I was considering "unoriginal songs used in movies", but figured it could be covered by the "too common" rule? As in all songs used in Guardians of the galaxy, for example.
Quote from: þerxh Sant-Enogat on August 17, 2025, 03:39:34 PMCan we have 'covers of original songs' as a category ?
I was also thinking song covers could be a good category, actually.
Commercial jingles
News musical compositions (think the BBC or MSNBC election themes, etc.)
Quote from: þerxh Sant-Enogat on August 17, 2025, 03:39:34 PMAnd songs with less than 5000 listenings on Spotify
I'm not sure about this one. Not everyone uses spotify, but even if you do I'm not sure how to get listener stats for all songs. Probably in the desktop app? I worry many people won't be able to nominate for this category.
Quote from: þerxh Sant-Enogat on August 17, 2025, 03:39:34 PMCan we have 'covers of original songs' as a category ?
Of course!
Although I do wonder if it might be more interesting if it was more constrained.
For example "Live covers that weren't recorded in the studio" or the other way round "Covers that appeared on a studio album". Or "Covers of songs nominated for TMT20" would be funny" Or "Covers are completely different from the original". Just some ideas. As it is written is still perfectly fine though!

I don't think after the first five or so nominations there will be many interesting picks left. Can we fill 25 nominations with this category?
My own (fairly standard/predictable) suggestions:
- Ska/reggae songs
- Metal songs
- Songs in French

That's true sadly. It sprung to mind as an interesting category but there are only so many news agencies with notable themes.

Songs that mention the weather

Hymns/spiritual songs
Indie rock (not sure exactly how to police this)
Jazz/big band
Quote from: Sir Ian Plätschisch on August 22, 2025, 04:22:46 PMIndie rock (not sure exactly how to police this)
I'm assuming we're not talking about the original definition of 'rock music released by independent labels', cause that would be fairly straightforward. Assuming we're talking about the genre of vaguely similar sounding alternative-ish rock music it's a bit trickier, but that is a problem with any genre.
In the past the solution has been to not really police too much at all and for all edgecases let people decide for themselves what nominations fall within the genre (this can also include not giving points to someone else's nominations because you don't really think it fits the category) and only intervene if people are going far beyond any reasonable understanding of the genre with their picks. That usually works well enough, although I suppose Indie is particularly broad and has various definitions that encompass artists that sound not much alike.
An alternative is go with some pre-defined list like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_indie_rock_musicians, which is fairly comprehensive (although it does still include some artists that I'm not too sure about)
I like that idea of the pre-defined list. Then there's no need to consider whatever definition each person would consider "indie".
Joint Lüc-Ely nomination: Eurodance/Eurodisco
I would also have liked to nominate "Nonclassical music with no lyrics" but that's mostly covered by the King's nomination.
Quote from: Breneir Tzaracomprada on August 19, 2025, 04:12:32 PMThat's true sadly. It sprung to mind as an interesting category but there are only so many news agencies with notable themes.
So are we dropping this?
One day left for category nominations.
Quote from: Glüc on August 29, 2025, 11:06:27 AMSo are we dropping this?
Yep, confirming it has been dropped.
Ok, nominations are closed. We now proceed to voting on the proposed categories.
Like last time, we shall be using single transferable vote, and I shall be calculating the results manually using excel (so if any politically minded Talossans are interested in the feasibility of this, pay attention).
This system is designed to result in somewhat equal representation for different factions (or music preferences) even when proportional representation is not possible. However, it is also really designed for a situation with more voters than candidates, which we don't have. In this particular case, there is a rather large risk everyone just votes for one of their own categories, resulting in a 7-way tie, which can be resolved by random chance, but that wouldn't yield a particularly satisfying result.
So instead we will cheat a bit, by artificially inflating the number of voters by giving everyone who nominated categories two votes, 1 including and 1 excluding their own suggestions.
In order to do so everyone who nominated songs will be asked to rank their own suggestions and all the others separately which will be interpreted as one vote with their own suggestions listed first followed by their other votes and one vote with only their votes for others suggestions.
Therefore
How to vote
A If you submitted any category suggestions.
1. Rank your own suggestions in order of preference.
2. Rank at least 5 of the other suggested categories in order of preference.
B If you did not submit any category suggestions
1. Rank at least 5 categories in order of preference.
Deadline
The deadline will be exactly one week (168 hours) from now

The categories for this year's TMTspecial are
- Covers of original songs
- Songs that include unusual time signatures
- Songs in French
- Songs with no lyrics
- Eurodance/Eurodisco
And of course
- Songs released on or after February 2nd, 2023
It's slightly ironic that the category that I suggested is the one I have least idea about what to nominate for it.
edit: except eurodance, where I have no idea where to start even.

There's more than enough room in these categories for me to smuggle some jazz and big band in here :P
Sad that indie lost though

Does "songs with no lyrics" mean instrumentals, or instruments and vocals without words? Both?
Anyway here are a few songs I would have nominated had different categories won
Songs about historical events
Advertising jingles
Songs that mention the weather
Hymns

I imagine eurodance is gonna be like a race to nominate Scatman, What is Love and I'm Blue and then people are gonna struggle :p Still, I really like the category because it does feel 'special' as in these aren't gonna be songs that would normally do well in TMT, but people can still enjoy them.

Considering I came up with the category myself, I hadn't really considered any suggestions for it 😂 But here's one I would have nominated.

Yeah, for the no lyrics category we obviously had film music and classical music in previous editions which were mostly dominated by songs with no lyrics anyway, but I'm hoping we don't get too much overlap, so it would be nice to have jazz instead. (Although I can't help much there myself as I don't know much jazz, so I'll probably stick to pop/rock instrumentals)

My interpretation would be both.
When I suggested the category (I may not have been the only one - I don't remember) I had just listened to this song from when I was a kid and it got me thinking: (this is not the exact version I remember but it's close)

Admittedly I kind of overlooked the eurodisco bit here. If Boney M, Modern Talking and even certain ABBA songs are included then surely we should be able to find enough nominations.
2025 Talossan Music Top 20 Special Edition: Covers of original songs
Many thanks to everyone who nominated songs. Of course, people who did not are still very welcome to participate.
Give your top three songs 3, 2, and 1 points, respectively. You must give points to exactly three songs.
Voting will last 96 hours (4 days) or until there are at least three voters. The top two songs from each group advance to the Final.

Tactical voting refers to either giving more points than you normally would to a song because it would make the difference between it going through or getting eliminated, or giving fewer points than you normally would to a song because it might kick a song you like even more out of the competition. This is hard to prevent, but my very strong request would be to not do it. Give points to the songs you believe deserve to go through, regardless of how others are voting. Doing otherwise reduces the value of votes that came before you, which is unfair to them. Remember that it's not a competition between voters, but a collective effort to make a nice list of songs we like. Thanks.
I did my best with all the links but there is always a chance some are broken or have a wrong version or bad audio quality.
If a link is broken or you have a suggestion for a better link, please contact me or post the link in the thread. Officially, we are not voting on the YouTube link, but on the listed Artist + Title.
COMMENTARY ON THE PROGRESS OF THE GAME, THE RULES, WHAT SONGS YOU LIKE, ETC., IS VERY WELCOME.
We have to move on, so I've posted the next two groups which can be voted on by anyone for the next 4 days, while group 1 remains open for one more vote.
If we again get only 2 voters for groups 2 and 3 in the next four days unfortunately I will have to cancel this category and we will play the final with 5 categories instead.
Seems reasonable, currently it takes too long to get through all groups and categories.
Votes:
GROUP 2
3 - Agnes - Fingers Crossed
2 - Gala - Freed From Desire
1 - Haddaway - What Is Love
GROUP 3
3 - Sparks - When Do I Get to Sing "My Way"
2 - Stereo MC's - Connected
1 - Technotronic - Pump up the Jam
GROUP 2 Unfortunate draw. Would have liked to give points to Gala as well
Eiffel 65 - Blue (da ba dee) - 3
Haddaway - What Is Love - 2
Boney M. - Ma Baker - 1
GROUP 3 Only 2 songs here really fit one of the genres imho. (Then again the genre appears to be too niche anyway, so maybe thats only appropriate)
Technotronic - Pump up the Jam - 3
Christian Steiffen - Ich fühl' mich Disco - 2
Sparks - When Do I Get to Sing "My Way" - 1
