Welcome to the nomination thread for the 2025 TMT special edition!

The first category is Covers of original songsNominations are now open.
We are looking for 25 nominations.
Each person may nominate two songs, with a deadline of 72 hours. (Please include a youtube link)
If we're not full after 72 hours everyone gets another nomination 24 hours after their previous nomination.
---Specific rules for this category---
(This would be my interpretation anyway. I hope
@þerxh Sant-Enogat, who nominated the category, agrees, but if not we can make some rule changes of course.)
- An artist doing a live performance of their own work is not a cover. In the spirit of the category I think we should also exclude solo artists doing a performance of a song by a band they were in at the time of recording, so no Paul McCartney doing a Beatles song for example.
- Technically pretty much all classical music is a cover, but classical music is usually credited to the composer rather than the performer and the idea of a piece is really the sheet music rather than a specific recording. I would suggest we dont allow covers where there is no recording in some form of the original song by the credited artist.
- We are looking for covers of a single song, so no mashups, medleys etc.
- Sampling a song is not the same as covering it. We are looking at new interpretations of an old idea rather than using an old interpretation for a new idea.
- Translations, parodies, instrumental covers, etc do count and are allowed.
--- ---
We are voting on the written combination artist (or composer) + title, rather than the specific version that is being linked to, in case people do not like that version.
If you can, please include a link to YouTube or some other video or audio file of the song. Otherwise I will find a link myself, but I might not always find the best version.

				I nominate these:
Last one is a cover of "Heroine and cocaine" by The Tiger Lillies.

My favorite cover is probably All That Remain's version of the The Thunder Rolls, which I nominated for last year's main TMT20. Therefore I won't nominate it again.
Panic! At the Disco - The Greatest Show
Weezer - Africa

Fugees - Killing Me Softly With His Song
Amy Winehouse - Someone To Watch Over Me

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - If I had the world to give
Molly Tuttle - Olympia, WA

I hadn't really thought about traditional songs, but I guess if we want to be consistent the answer would have to be no, because there isn't a recording of the original song.

Noted. I have removed that one. And added Amy Winehouse.

				Chvrches - Bela Lugosi's Dead
Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat

Love will tear us apart (Joy Division), cover by Nouvelle Vague

(A french group I recommend, many bossa-nova covers of new wave/punk songs)

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Brian Setzer Orchestra - Sleep Walk

There are 11 spots left! Everyone now gets one additional nomination every 24 hours.
To be clear: those who haven't nominated yet can still post two picks at once (but then would have to wait another 24 hours before their third nomination)

				3. Madness - One Step Beyond
(Sneaking Ska in after all)

				3. Dexys - Both Sides Now

Strictly speaking this was posted less than 24 hours after your previous nomination, but considering we weren't full when the 24 hours were up I will count this as if it were posted then. (I think there is precedent for this)

Anyway, nominations are closed. I will set up nominations for the next category and then we shall proceed to voting in the other thread.

The second category is Eurodance/EurodiscoNominations are now open.
I hope
@Sir Lüc, who nominated the category, agrees, but if not we can make some rule changes of course.)
We are looking for songs from one of two particular genres. That means it's not just dance/disco from europe. Songs from outside of Europe are allowed if they fit the genre.
There is no hard definition here. I'm also not relying on any particular list, but these two pages are a good starting point:
https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/euro-disco/
https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/eurodance/
If you want to nominate something that is not labelled euro-disco or eurodance (or a subgenre of one of these) on RYM you should probably have a very strong argument or you might want to reconsider.
If you feel like nominating an edgecase (especially one that is labelled eurodance/euro-disco) I'm not gonna reject it if it's at least eurodance/disco-adjacent, but of course people are free to withhold points from songs they believe do not fit the category.

We are voting on the written combination artist (or composer) + title, rather than the specific version that is being linked to, in case people do not like that version.
If you can, please include a link to YouTube or some other video or audio file of the song. Otherwise I will find a link myself, but I might not always find the best version.

Vitas - The 7th Element (https://youtu.be/989-7xsRLR4)

				1. Gigi d'Agostino - L'Amour Toujours
2. Sash! - Ecuador

By following the eurodance list in the RYM link above, I came up with these:
1. Erasure - Take a chance on me
2. Snap! - Rythm is a dancer
If they don't fit the category, then I plead utter and complete ignorance 😁

Only 19 spots left, folks! Get those nominations posted!

Gonna start with an Eurodance and an Eurodisco respectively (if Marechià counts as such, which I think it does):
1. Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam
2. Nu Genea - Marechià

				1. La Bouche - Be My Lover
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3MtiifXp9k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3MtiifXp9k)
2. Neja - Restless
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS-I1jJrxfY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS-I1jJrxfY)
Restless is not explicitly classified as Eurodance on RYM but as "Europop, Dance-Pop, Euro House, Dance, Italo Dance" I think it should still be fine

Fwiw, Italo Dance is listed as a subgenre of Eurodance, so I guess it does count according to RYM. Either way this would have been totally fine.
(There have been nominations that have been pushing the boundaries quite a bit more already imho. As mentioned Im not gonna disallow edgecases.)

There are 15 spots left! Everyone now gets one additional nomination every 24 hours after their previous nomination(s).

				3. Sparks - When do I get to sing "My way"

4. Sparks - More than a sex machine

				So many classics still unpicked
Scatman John - Scatman (ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop)
10 spots left

Just to make things easier for myself:
5. Haddaway - What is love

6 spots left

Ah...time zone issues. I thought it was showing CET, and sat there waiting to post and missed by an hour 😂
Edit: Or maybe I'm actually just an idiot and messed up the time. The timezone in my profile says CET.

This should definitely be more than 24 hours after the previous nomination (or 25)
6. Saint Etienne - He's on the phone

Patrick Hernandez - Born to Be Alive
4 spots left

Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee)
2 spots left

I figured we'd need something Swedish in this category, so as my last nomination I of course chose this:
Agnes - Fingers crossed

				Gala -
Will Grigg's on Fire Freed From Desire
(I think that means we're full)

I suddenly had this urge to go to a football game and sing. I'll restrain myself though.

We move way from a category that's entirely in common time almost by defition to the complete opposite:
The third category is Songs that include unusual time signaturesNominations are now open.
I hope
@Gjermund Higraff , who nominated the category, agrees, but if not we can make some rule changes of course.)
I'm mostly going with the wikipedia definition of unsual time signatures (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_musical_works_in_unusual_time_signatures), so anything thats not in 2/2, 3/2, 4/2, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 6/4, 6/8, 6/16, 9/4, 9/8, 9/16, 12/4, 12/8, 12/16. Additionally also including 8/4 and 8/8, because they are likely uncommon notations of a very common pattern. Generally if a song is clearly in a common time signature but the official notation just uses an uncommon notation for no particularly reason that probably shouldn't count.
Its ok if only part of the song is in a uncommon time signature, but it needs to be a signficant part, not just a couple of bars. (Just try to stick with the spirit of the category.)

				I agree with the rules.

My nominations, and I'll just include time signatures in case I'm mistaken and someone can correct me (in case I'm hearing things that aren't there😂)
1. Nick Drake - River man (5/4)
2. Ásgeir - Nýfallið regn (7/8?)

				Here's Inti Illimani's take on Guillén's Sensemayá:
And the much earlier composition by Silvestre Revueltas [1] of the same Sensemayá:
[1] I've seen in the score that it's in 9/8 (3/4 + 3/8) and 7/8, but have also read that it's occasionally 7/16).

Genesis - The Battle of Epping Forest
Steven Wilson ft. Ninet Tayeb - Routine

i relied on the classic assumption that "each bar of this song has two dotted quavers, a crotchet, and two more dotted quavers. if you think about this in 16ths per bar, this equated to the notes equaling 3, 3, 4, 3, 3. a pyramid has four triangles and one square that make up the shape."

I messed up and agreed to rules that disqualified my original third pick (9/8)😂, so I've panicked and gone all out:
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Celestial terrestrial commuters (19/16)

Attention to people nominating: We need a third vote on the current groups being voted on (in the other thread). Otherwise we cant continue with the voting.

				Soundgarden - Spoonman (7/4)

Quote from: Gjermund Higraff on September 28, 2025, 11:34:06 PMI messed up and agreed to rules that disqualified my original third pick (9/8)😂, so I've panicked and gone all out:
Perhaps we should maybe tweak the rules a bit. According to the aforementioned wikipedia article: "Time signatures that group nine beats into 3+3+3 are very common in music. This section only lists other groupings, such as 2+3+2+2."
Really I think the first case (3+3+3), so like '1-and-a-2-and-a-3-and-a' should not be allowed, but other cases should be. (Same for 12/8 and 6/8). I'm not sure which category your planned nomination falls under?

Note, me organising this was always inevitably gonna run into the issue that I'm really not qualified to speak on this. I'm not a musician (I play a bit of piano. Maybe I should learn Pyramid Song), so anyone with a better understanding of music theory is more than welcome to explain their reasons for why something should or should not be accepted.

Ok, but if the whole section is one bar and there's 16 16th in a bar, wouldn't it still sort of be in 4/4? Or are we saying it's in 16/16? (Again, I'm not really a musician :p)

I have no clue, just suggested the category because figured it would be fun 😂

The verse in this is mostly 4/4, but then it gets more interesting. No clue myself so I had to look up this info, of course.
Grateful Dead - Unbroken chain (4/4, 6/4, 5/4, 11/16, 15/16)

Come one now, others need to join in and nominate! Pleeeeeeeease! Do like me, pick a random Mahavishnu Orchestra track or something. They're bound to be within the rules 😂

System Of A Down - Question!

Instead of repeating the "so many classics left unpicked" from the previous category, I'll go ahead and pick one.
The Beatles - All you need is love (7/4 in the verses, mostly)

				https://youtu.be/AWAsI3U2EaE?si=v9OnFdlkBCwIaug8
Golden brown   The Stranglers

The Allman Brothers Band - Whipping post

Genesis - Turn It on Again

				Chicago - Introduction (19/8)

				One more to go, then.

Porcupine Tree - The Sound of Muzak
I guess that means we're full. I will check tomorrow and open nominations for the next category (no lyrics)
Also a reminder that votes are open on the eurodance category and we need at least one more voter to continue.

The third category is Songs with no lyrics
Nominations are now open.
I hope
@King Txec  , who nominated the category, agrees, but if not we can make some rule changes of course.)
A song may include vocals, as long as these aren't words. Invented languages and gibberish that is intended to sound like words do count as lyrics however. (So ooooh aaaah is
ok, but prisencolinensinainciusol is
not ok)
Of course music without any vocals also counts.

We are voting on the written combination artist (or composer) + title, rather than the specific version that is being linked to, in case people do not like that version.
If you can, please include a link to YouTube or some other video or audio file of the song. Otherwise I will find a link myself, but I might not always find the best version.

Btw, we do of course know the composition of the first final already. I will post these in a separate thread soon, but there is no rush as the deadline will be November 30th probably.
I was thinking about broadcasting the top 3 for each category in the discord on election night, but considering the somewhat limited enthusiasm for the event so far, I'm not sure that's gonna be worth it.

Gheorghe Zamfir & André Rieu - The Lonely Shepherd (Einsamer Hirte):
Arturo Márquez - Danzón no. 2:

Trisomie 21 - La fête triste

				Mahavishnu Orchestra - Cosmic strut

David Crosby - Tamalpais high (at about 3)

Reminder that we need another vote on the final two eurodance groups!

Smashing pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Tijuana Taxi.

I think that leaves 3 spots available.

				Fleetwood Mac - Albatross
(I could have chosen a video with more tasteful visuals, but where's the fun in that?)

				Jerry Martin - Sim Broadway

If Gjermund's count is correct, which I don't doubt, we are closed now. Will open next category tomorrow.

The fifth category is Songs in French
Nominations are now open.
We are looking for 25 nominations.
Each person may nominate two songs, with a deadline of 72 hours. (Please include a youtube link)
If we're not full after 72 hours everyone gets another nomination 24 hours after their previous nomination.
---Specific rules for this category---
If there's a non French word here and there that's ok, but a large majority of the lyrics must be in French. Dialects and variations of French spoken in other countries than France are ok. Artist don't need to be native French speakers.

Reminder that alongside the nominations there are also votes on the groupstage of the other categories going on. We are currently voting on the first two groups of songs with unusual time signatures. The deadline is in less than 24 hours and we need more votes to proceed!

I don't think this counts, but I did come across it and think it's hilarious

				Pascal Obispo - Superflu
Gérard Presgurvic - Et Voilà Qu'elle Aime

Will go with Stromae's Alors on danse

Christine and the queens - Saint Claude
Stromae - Fils de joie

Kinda wanted to nominate Stromae as well (and probably will later), but something different for now:
Noir Désir - L'homme pressé
Angèle ft. Roméo Elvis - Tout Oublier

There are 18 spots left! Everyone now gets one additional nomination every 24 hours after their previous nomination(s)

France Gall - Ella elle l'a

Slightly over 24 hours left to vote on the current groups (in the other thread)!
Anyone has any suggestions re how to increase participation (esp for the voting)?

Not for this run, sorry. I guess the categories have been "too special" to be able to keep the enthusiasm of the regular competition, perhaps? I have to admit, "unusual time signatures" sounds a bit nerdy, as an example 😂
Anyway, my additional nomination for the french section:
Kate & Anna McGarrigle - Complainte pour Ste-Cathérine

Serge Gainsbourg - Vu de l'extérieur

Plastic Bertrand - Ça plane pour moi

Noir Désir - Le vent nous portera

Françoise Hardy - Le temps de l'amour

I just needed some inspiration to come up with an additional nomination, so I found a video called "My top 100 songs in french from the 80s". Listened through it and liked two. One has already been nominated, and the other was in the last regular TMT20, so didn't want to do it again. So then I came up with this:
Kraftwerk - Tour de France

I hope it's not against the spirit of the category that the video includes english subtitles (don't know how accurate they are either)
Jacques Brel - Le moribond

				Stromae - Formidable
Again, we're not getting enough voters in the voting thread to continue.
Should we even continue with this edition? I'm not very hopeful about participation going up for french lyrics or recent songs..

I wonder where people went. There were more people nominating categories and possibly also the covers section, or is my memory faulty? Were the categories too limiting perhaps? Usually you get a couple of extra nominations, now it's a struggle finding enough nominations I actually want to nominate in each of the categories 😂 At least the recent songs category is a bit more general than everything except the covers one, so perhaps it'll bring back some interest. I may be delusional, though.

In the meantime, I'll just make another nomination.
Joe Dassin - Les Champs-Elysées
