Title: What are you listening to? Music recommendations
Post by: Baron Alexandreu Davinescu on December 27, 2025, 08:56:46 PM
Share what you're listening to!  Share as often as you like, share whatever info you like, share whatever links you like, and share whatever context you like!

Janelle Monáe - Dirty Computer

I had to do a couple of hours of driving today, and I spent most of it with this album on repeat.  It's quirky, deep, funny, and replete with amazing beats.

I don't know how to share the actual music but lately I have been listening to a lot of Chris LeDoux and I am a huge fan of a young man named Alex Schofield. My wife and I used to organize a concert fundraiser for a local charity and he performed at it the last year we did the fundraiser. He is now a singer-songwriter in Nashville and a touring musician.

I am more of a 60's and 70's guy but some 90's are good. My favorite LeDoux song is This Cowboys Hat and Alex Schofield I recommend Sweet Simona and/or Headstone

Title is "Gdzie jest biały węgorz? (Zejście)" and by Cypis. The song is essentially about drugs and depression.

Here would be the original:

My family is big on YouTube Music. We grandfathered some benefits from Google Music into YouTube Red (now Premium), and to me this bundle is totally worth it.

I really dislike how little Spotify pays its artists, but I need audiobook access and podcast access, unfortunately.  TidaL pays artists much better, but it doesn't have those things.  I better look into Apple Music and YouTube Music to see what their compensation rates might be.

I've been listening to this. (Well, I just started listening to it this morning on the way to work, only got it in the mail yesterday.)
As far as I know, this is the earliest known live recordings of the Bad Brains, recently unearthed somewhere, remastered, and finally released 45 years after they were recorded.
I haven't gotten to disc two yet, but disc one is great. I settled for CD, because the vinyl (released on Record Store Day) is already going for ridiculous prices.

I've also been listening to this group a lot. I've seen them twice in concert and finally bought an album (which I hope to have the band members autograph next time I see them.)
All the members are from Toronto, Canada, except the new drummer, who is from Akron. She was previously in a couple of punk bands from Akron, and she's fantastic.
They are going to be doing another show in Akron in April. I plan on being there.
Most of their stuff is original material, but they also play a few covers of other surf instrumental band's tunes.

There is a book called 1001 albums to listen to before you die. Someone made a site: https://1001albumsgenerator.com/ that generates an album every day to listen to and rate between 1 and 5 stars. For the past 3 years or so I have been slowly working my way through this. Currently on 465 albums rated.

(Unfortunately there are quite a lot of albums on the list that you don't really need to hear before you die at all. Apparently the author really likes c-tier britpop bands nobody outside of the UK has ever heard of and c-tier dated 60s psychedelic nonsense. Oh well)

My album for today was Simply Red - Picture Book. Would not recommend. It's bland, cheesy and it contains a disgustingly awful Talking Heads cover.

Three years?!  That's a huge commitment.  You should let the person who made the site know -- I bet they'll be impressed!
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Music recommendations
Post by: Glüc on March 05, 2026, 02:22:15 AM
Heh, well I dont need to tell them, because the site keeps all sorts of statistics of the rating, but I doubt theyll be too impressed, cause there are already 692 people who finished the whole list. (Which is confusingly 1089 albums long - I think it covers different editions of the book.)

Also 465 divided by roughly 3 years (actually its more like 2,5 I think?) is clearly not actually one album a day because I frequently have to skip a day.

Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas

80's sounding (apparently its from 1990) dream pop with shiny bright vocals, post-punky basslines, and indecipherable lyrics. I was only vaguely aware of them before. I did not expect to be this blown away.

Best tracks (in tracklist order): Pitch the Baby, Iceblink Luck, Fifty-fifty clown, Heaven or Las Vegas, I Wear Your Ring, but probably it's best to experience the whole thing from start to finish.

Recently, I've been listening to a lot of Les Miserables and Rent again.  One of my daughters has those albums on her iPod and so we've been singing the songs and talking about them a lot.

I've noticed I'm considerably grumpier about Rent than I used to be... Benny seems a lot more reasonable than when I was a kid!
