It is that time again: Talossas most succesful and longrunning cultural tradition is about to start!

The past couple of years this has been very succesfully organised by @Sir Ian Plätschisch. However, after very quickly talking to him it appears I will be doing this one as Sir Ian is rather busy outside of Talossa. Of course we are all very grateful to him for all the past editions he's organised and I'm very much hoping for his participation in this edition as well.

2026 TMT20 Nomination Rules

Nominations are now open. Everyone (including guests and prospective citizens) is invited to nominate songs to make up the 2026 edition of the Talossan Music Top 20.

The competition will consist of 150 songs. 100 songs have qualified automatically based on their performance in the 2025 TMT20. Additionally 6 songs are nominated based on this years special edition. Therefore, there will be a total of 44 new nominations.

We have somewhat of a tight schedule this time. For now we will start with 3 nominations per person. If we don't have enough songs by Noon TST on July 11th, everyone will be free to nominate one new song every 12 hours.

We are voting on the written combination artist (or composer) + title, rather than the specific version that is being linked to, in case people do not like that version.

If you can, please include a link to YouTube or some other video or audio file of the song. Otherwise I will find a link myself, but I might not always find the best version.

All genres of music are welcome. Nominating an entire classical symphony is probably not a good idea, however, because it doesn't really work with the song-format and some voters may decide to skip it.

Do not worry about nominating songs because they are not popular enough (or because they are too mainstream). You do not get a prize if your song wins. If you get someone to listen to a song or genre he did not know or like before, that is nice too. We all seem to love our 70s rock classics, and if your all time favorite song happens to fall in that category, go for it! But if it does not, adding some diversity to the list is just as good. Just nominate whatever song you think deserves to be in the list for whatever reason.

Round 1 consists of ten groups of ten songs each. The top five songs in each group advance to Round 2 (and are given entry into next year's TMT20).

Groups are drawn randomly in such a way that each group contains one 6th 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th place song from a Round 2 group last year, and 5 new nominations.*

Any song eliminated by random chance (and any song eliminated by random chance last year that is eliminated based on last year's result) will be given entry into next year's TMT20.

Tactical voting refers to either giving more points than you normally would to a song because it would make the difference between it going through or getting eliminated, or giving fewer points than you normally would to a song because it might kick a song you like even more out of the competition. This is hard to prevent, but my very strong request would be to not do it. Give points to the songs you believe deserve to go through, regardless of how others are voting. Doing otherwise reduces the value of votes that came before you, which is unfair to them. Remember that it's not a competition between voters, but a collective effort to make a nice list of songs we like. Thanks.

It's always gonna be hard for a new nomination to compete with songs already in the list. Personally even when I'm positively surprised by a song I've never heard before it's just hard to rate it against songs I've known and liked for years, but that doesn't mean it can't be a nice discovery. I frequently put new songs I kinda like in my spotify playlist and then later it becomes one of my favourite songs. There were definitely nice discoveries I didn't have points for this year and I'm thankful to whoever nominated them for sharing. I hope others feel the same.

Also there is a playlist with all TMT nominations of all time that I will update with all the new nominations when I have time.




Edit: Also to add to that: of course even for the songs that maybe don't appeal to me as much I'm still glad they were nominated. TMT is better with more diverse songs and styles reflecting different tastes and I'd much rather have more people participating even if that means songs I like get replaced with songs I don't and I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way.

* Actually I have noted recently that due to the tmt electorate shifting many songs I like tend to perform better than a couple years ago. That's nice, but I do sometimes worry about the risk of it becoming a bit stale. I would really love to attract more participants with different tastes so TMT stays interesting (and also keep voters that participated in previous years with clearly different preferences from me interested as well.)

2025 TMT20 ROUND 2

Round 2 consists of ten groups of ten songs each. The top five songs in each group advance to Round 3.

Groups are drawn randomly in such a way that each group contains from this year: one 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place song from Round 1, and from last year: one 9th or 10th place song from Round 3, one 7th or 8th place song from Round 3, one 6th placed from Round 3 or eliminated semifinalist, one song ranked 11-20, and one song ranked 1-10.

We will vote on groups two at a time (although you can vote on only one of the groups if you want). Each voting period will last three days (72 hours). Votes cast after that will not be accepted, with the exception that we will always keep going until we have at least three votes per group.

Tactical voting refers to either giving more points than you normally would to a song because it would make the difference between it going through or getting eliminated, or giving fewer points than you normally would to a song because it might kick a song you like even more out of the competition. This is hard to prevent, but my very strong request would be to not do it. Give points to the songs you believe deserve to go through, regardless of how others are voting. Doing otherwise reduces the value of votes that came before you, which is unfair to them. Tactical voting refers to either giving more points than you normally would to a song because it would make the difference between it going through or getting eliminated, or giving fewer points than you normally would to a song because it might kick a song you like even more out of the competition. This is hard to prevent, but my very strong request would be to not do it. Give points to the songs you believe deserve to go through, regardless of how others are voting. Doing otherwise reduces the value of votes that came before you, which is unfair to them. Remember that it's not a competition between voters, but a collective effort to make a nice list of songs we like. Thanks.

Have You Ever Seen the Rain is a new nomination and immediately enters the top 20 as the highest scoring new nomination this year.

Child in Time and Taxman would also be debuting in the top 20 if they survive the semifinal.

For Street Spirit this is the first final, although it has made the top 20 before.

A lot of last years top 20 songs ended up in group 4. How Soon is Now and Paranoid did not make it, along with Africa from group 5. As a result 12 out of last years top 20 are still in the running.

Take Five is back in the top 20 after 6 years. The last time was in 2020.

Jump Around would be debuting if it survives the semifinal.

The Semifinal consists of one group of 15 songs (the third, fourth, and fifth place songs from each group in Round 3). The top five songs advance to the Final, the next five (in order) are #16 - #20 of the 2026 TMT20, and the last five are the final five songs to be eliminated.

Tactical voting refers to either giving more points than you normally would to a song because it would make the difference between it going through or getting eliminated, or giving fewer points than you normally would to a song because it might kick a song you like even more out of the competition. This is hard to prevent, but my very strong request would be to not do it. Give points to the songs you believe deserve to go through, regardless of how others are voting. Doing otherwise reduces the value of votes that came before you, which is unfair to them. Remember that it's not a competition between voters, but a collective effort to make a nice list of songs we like. Thanks.
