We will try to salvage some of the content on the old Memrise course, but the one we're currently developing will be more of a vocab primer for beginners

But "electing" a monarch is no different than electing a President.

The thing is, this is simply untrue.  Should we start calling John "President Woolley" since he was elected?  Or the old kings of Jerusalem?  Or the Holy Roman Emperor?  Elective monarchy is an old institution.  Possibly older than hereditary primogeniture.

And if the opposition is rooted in the fixed term of the position.  7 years is a lifetime in Talossa, as with any micronation.  SCA Kings/Queens serve for fixed periods and then move on, or repeat their service depending.  Though they are chosen via trial by combat, as opposed to election.

As has been pointed out elsewhere, exhaustively, you can call any position the "king."  There have been kings who were elected for year-long terms, kings who were chosen by an oligarchy, pairs of kings elected to rotating terms, and many other varieties.  Tafial rightly has said that in political science terms, it's just a meaningless label -- just like president, in fact.

But talk about bad faith -- it is deliberately trying to misunderstand to grouse about how there have been periodically elected kings and so therefore it is wrong to call this a president.  But hey, guess what else is usually periodically elected?  Presidents.  It's just as valid a label.  And to a lot of us, the position of king means more than just a magical label, anyway.  It means at least some independent power not subject to partisan election, for one.  It's not as if you don't understand what Dixhet is saying, it's just that it runs contrary to your preferred branding.

I just do not understand what is so heinous about an elected monarch. There is absolutely no reason why the dignity and majesty that comes with reigning cannot be maintained just because there's a new one every 7 years. It can be an entire tradition—we can renew all of our commitments to this country the moment we crown a new monarch!

Over and over again, I have pointed out that Republicans plan to keep on attacking the monarchy.  They have already announced their next move: they're going to strip the honours system from the king and put it under Government control.  The FDT and other supporters of the proposed presidency do not consider themselves bound by any deal.  They feel free to come back with the knife and keep on cutting, whittling things down until they're happy.

Not a presidency (FRIENDLY REMINDER)

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I don't find it productive lump things together so clumsily this way. In the interest of nuance, I have no intentions of reneging on a deal struck in good faith and I suspect many in my party and those who support this compromise are of the same mind. We're not all scheming lefties callously planning the demise of conservative in Talossa. If American politics have taught me anything lately it's that bipartisanship is a fundamental part of representative democracy. As far as I know, this compromise is written by both the government and the opposition and since it's the one we're talking about it's clearly the best solution they can hash out. If and when it passes it'll have my full throated endorsement and I will defend it against anyone (If it fails however, I will persist on the issue of reform—NOT ABOLITION—to an annoying degree.)

The compromise is a good deal. The monarch may reign with dignity and honor charged with leading the rituals of our country and STILL be accountable to the citizens of the realm. We can have both.

It's a pity that this is the last edition! I did enjoy reading all the back issues. I hope someone can start another iteration of Talossan print media. A newspaper like Beric'ht or another magazine series like this one.

*taking a seat and asking the neighbour * where could i get zero sugar soda & vegan popcorn here?

is there a deep-state in talossa too? like freedems puppet mastering talossans through some dark ritual into kingless zombies or suchs? boy, that would be fun  8)

I already eat children and worship the Devil in the American iteration of this storyline, why not add masterminding a coup d'état against the king in an attempt to turn everyone into republican dogs

(Sarcasm for the uninitiated)

I'd like to request a change of province. I have flown the coop from rural Middle Tennessee to the bustling cities of the San Francisco Bay Area. I believe I'll be in the Province of Maricopa now. I'd be happy to update any and all information with the office of the Secretary of State.

Done. Welcome to Maricopa.

And needless to say—I informed the Chancery weeks in advance about my move and I have absolutely no nefarious intentions in my transfer. I would just like the Talossan province to reflect the actual place I'm actually living in catchment-wise.

Who is proposing a presidential system? There isn't anyone of any seriousness who has proposed a presidential system—I know because if there were a proposal I would be the FIRST to sign up.

Tar, feather and red herrings aside, the institution is broken and it needs an update. We can all spin around with baseball bats around our noses and go all dizzy all day long, NOTHING will change the fact that the monarchy as it stands cannot be allowed to remain as it is.
