I fed the Midjourney art AI the simple prompt "Talossa," and this is the best of what I got:





If you've never heard of these sorts of things (DALL-E is the most famous), it uses artificial intelligence to sample millions of existing artwork and associated keywords to create new algorithmically generated art.  How did it decide this is what "Talossa" should look like?  No idea.

"Patriotic Talossan poster in vintage style" didn't return much interesting, illustrate the limitations of the technology -- this is a good sample of what it created.  Not enough reference in its dataset for the mystery word "Talossan," I think, so it just sort of slapped together blocky imitations of letters and vaguely flag-like shapes.



Now "Talossan National Congress propaganda poster in constructivist style."  Not sure how it came up with these or what it might mean beyond random mishmash of constructivist hallmarks, but it's cool.



Last but not least, "Vintage cartoon-style poster of the glorious leader called The Seneschal fighting off many enemies."



Pretty rad!

I went down a rabbit hole with this. It was fun making images!

At least one of the TNC posters generated got the colors right... :P

I fed DALL-E some prompts this time.

"A realistic map of the country of Talossa in the year 2054." Behold the future of Talossan orthography.



"The ideal Talossan person, impressionist painting."  The answer seems to be... Rodney Dangerfield?



"Propaganda poster for a glorious Talossan regime which ushers in a golden age of a thousand years."  Welcome to the first year of the Taloan Tilglaas, everyone.

It's very interesting to see what iconography and visual semiotics that talossa has imprinted into the Internet from which the ai has drawn from.
Green and red from the flag in the landscape, stars of the Republic, the yellow and black of the TNC. Even the fonts a reminiscent of Brict Talossans headlines.

I have no idea how it generates its output, but I would guess that it doesn't have any specific associations with the word Talossa, beyond contextually assuming that it is some sort of country or movement.

GPT4 was just released today, so I'm going to see if I can do any cool tricks with it and Talossan.

You likely also get some...bleed-over, so to speak, from the fact that talossa is of course a Finnish word. If the AI looks for internet results from more than just English-language sources, that may have an effect. Perhaps S:reu Dangerfield is in a house in Tampere? :P
