Does anyone know of a website where one can play Dungeons & Dragons for free without having to play against or with other people? I have tried playing games online with other people and it usually turns out badly for me and sometimes for them as I am not really very good at most games.

Do you mean like a DnD themed videogame? Or a place where you can play a campaign of DnD?
Also, what are the games you've played? I may be able to help, since I've played DnD and DnD themed videogames lol.

Unfortunately, D&D by its very nature is a multiplayer game. At a minimum, you need two people: one to run the world and one person to play as a character. Otherwise, you're just writing fiction. Let me guess: you've always liked the idea but never really had a chance to play the game as you would like? A lot of people are in that situation.

If you become more open to the idea of playing with other people, let me know. I've run a game in Talossa before, and it turned out pretty well.  Last time we had Ian P, Istefan, and NRB as players.  I think they had a good time.  I might be able to do so again, although not right at this exact moment. It's a very fun game, generally!

If you're looking for a pretty good simulation of a lot of the mechanics, the recent game Baldur's Gate 3 is run with a facsimile of the game rules. That's probably about as close as you can get to a one-player D&D game.

This would be awesome! I've played lots of games in play by post format and a few in person and over Roll20.

Well, it does seem like people are interested again.  I can put this together in a bit (a couple of months).  I've been DMing for like twenty years now or so.

My D&D site is here, although most of the content pages are specific to campaigns I'm running (like this "book of prophecy" or this set of "memories").

If you guys ever decide to broadcast this on Twitch please record it. An e-sports series would be awesome for Fora Talossa.

I've only ever played over Roll20, but can second it as a good way to do so if not in-person.

I would be interested in playing with a group here. My previous problems often involved joining an existing team of players and them turning on me for easy points

In real dungeons & dragons, it's usually a collaborative experience. The players work together as a team to try to achieve goals or overcome obstacles, and it doesn't actually help that much to turn against another player since it just weakens your team. There's definitely no benefit in the game mechanics for hurting another player or defeating them. There are jerks who played D&D, of course, just like anything else... But usually players work together.

I used to play the paper and dice version with a regular group and loved it I would like to try again with a better group
