Something I've been tinkering with for a few weeks now is a Talossan translation of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". Recorded in 1976 by Canadian artist Gordon Lightfoot, the song was intended to commemorate the November 10, 1975 sinking of the lake freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior, with all 29 crew on board lost.

The song is pretty popular in the Midwest to this day; it seems pretty much every little old-school neighborhood bar across Wisconsin probably has it queued up on the jukebox a few times a week around this time of year. For my part, I've always liked the guitar part; it has an appropriately haunting quality and overall the melody feels like it "lurches" a bit (like a boat going through rough seas, perhaps...)

My translation is definitely far from perfect -- it hasn't been proofread by any Ladintschen, and it definitely does not rhyme, at least not intentionally. Some of the translations are less literal than others, mostly for the sake of rhythm. I dunno, just something I've been kicking around, I guess.

Seeing as it's now the 11th, I missed the actual anniversary by a day, alas.

It was not intended to be, as I didn't write the lyrics, just translate them. Is the contest not supposed to be original work?

Eh, if you want to put it in at a "reduced score" for judging, I suppose I might as well. The more entries, the merrier.
