Mic’haglh Autófil, O.Be

Facta, non verba — Deeds, not words. This is the motto that best describes what an Autófil Government has to offer.

Vague platitudes, foggy promises, and (most recently) blatantly misquoting your opponents might make for zippy campaigning, but it leaves people asking "where's the beef?" That's not what I'm about, and it's not what the URL is about either.

What am I about, then? Accountability, honesty, and civility — the bedrocks of responsible, legitimate government.

  • Accountability means several things to me, but the most relevant one at the moment is making promises you can actually deliver on. Even if it means they're smaller steps, goals achieved over time, the important thing is that you chart out a reasonable roadmap with which you can guide, and against which you can be measured. They may not be as flashy, but flashy promises and pomp and fluff tend to be more disappointing if they don't work out. If you're familiar with "SMART" goals, you know that the R in SMART stands for Realistic.
  • Honesty means being able to go before the Ziu or the public and say "yes, we tried that, and it didn't work the way we wanted," or "it's taking longer than we had hoped, but here's where we're at, and here's the cause for the delay" or "no, we haven't gotten to it yet because of X, Y, or Z, but we haven't forgotten or abandoned it, either". This is the approach I take in Terpelaziun responses, and it's been an approach that has been lauded by members of the Opposition as informative.
  • Civility is one I've covered elsewhere at greater length, but could alternatively be summarized as saying that if you're going to campaign on the issue of "Talossa should be fun", you may not want to be the one most frequently guilty of making Talossa not-fun.

Vision is important in leadership, so let me tell you a little about what I envision when I see a Talossa that lives up to its potential.

  • I see a Talossa that can discuss its differences without attacking each other all the time.
  • I see a Talossa where all of us — even those of us who aren't doing it yet — have the ability to let small things slide and "remember the human".
  • I see a Talossa that is welcoming to new immigrants.
  • I see a Talossa that can weather the storms, even as we chart a course to avoid them where we can.
  • I see a Talossa that believes in liberal democracy, and understands that such a system only works when we treat each other like fellow citizens instead of the enemy.
  • I see a Talossa that understands that teamwork is important, even as we may disagree over who leads the team.

Next door in the Big Neighbor, their Constitution mentions forming "a more perfect union". We've formed ours too. Are you in?
