Sir Lüc

Azul, as outlined in my Maestro platform, I am committed to changing the name of this province during the current term.

I am open to suggestions regarding what process we follow, though my tentative outline would be to:

- Have a public consultation on this forum to come up with potential new names;
- Decide on a candidate name by some kind of process of elimination, if needed;
- Introduce and pass legislation at the provincial level amending the Constitution;
- Introduce and pass legislation at the national level amending El Lexhatx.

Either way, a good way to start would be to begin with that consultation.

I mentioned how the new name should preferably be Talossan and starting with "Be"; in my mind, the latter is to ensure familiarity with the new name, a la "look, we're still the same province"; while the former felt like a natural requirement. These are only my opinions, though.

If we went with those, though, using "bel-" and "ben-" Talossan prefixes is a low hanging fruit to find ourselves a name that fits the bill.

We could additionally look at the features that set us apart from the other provinces, like our coast bordering the river and the tranquil woodland of Riverside Park. I particularly think "Belaschagă", "beautiful-copse", sounds like an ok option (or even "Benschagă", "good-copse", if we wanted to retain the whole "Ben" root.)

I explored doing something with "Betz", "birch", but it appears that birch trees are much more common in Lake Park, Vuode. "Besc", "bush", could be a more useful option for a compound name, together with one of the many words for river,stream,brook.

"Berucă", "crag", could refer to the former ravines of Riverside Park, which are still partially there, though flattened by F.L.Olmsted's work.

"Berberïă" could be a nod at a certain independent streak in our province.

"Beatifică", "that which makes one happy", is I suppose a poetic name but probably needs tweaking to sound less awkward.

Here's an idea I just had that should not be seriously considered (probably):
I went thru all the words beginning with Be, and Lüc's ideas for that are better than anything I came up with. Then, I thought, well, I'll look up famous people from Milwaukee, keeping with the trend of our province being named after a person. Went to Wikipedia, "list of famous people from Milwaukee", and one immediately jumped out at me...Liberace!The flamboyant gay piano virtuoso. (Of whom it is said, he never came out of the closet because he was too busy wearing it.) How much further can you disassociate yourself from a fascistic past than by naming your province after Liberace? We could call it... Liberacia. Got the "liberty" part in it. And like our province, Liberace was half Italian. Only problems are, he wasn't from the Benito area (he was born and lived a few miles west of Benito), and also...doesn't start with Be.
Other (lame) ideas, none starting with Be... Cjartzara, "Oakland", for the name of the street that runs right thru the middle of our province. (Being a Cjovani, I like the Cj beginning of that one.) Cjarföglha (look, another one), "Oakleaf". There's another street in Benito by that name. Then I thought, why not just Riverside? That's an important name in Talossan history (Riverside High School) (isn't it also our province's capital?) But that would be something like Fiovasida, and we already have a Fiova. (I know, all bad ideas. Hey, I'm trying.)

Cjartzara and Cjarföglha are super cool. So, too, is Cjovania?

I appreciate the suggestion, but Cjovani "culture" is too weird to impose on an entire province. (Plus, we are just too Ohio-centric.)

A couple weeks is not too long to fall quiet but I was wondering...any progress on de-dictatorializing the province's name?

Not really. Are there any other Benitians wanting to weigh in?

Sir Lüc

Mic'haglh being back means there's at least three of us around, which as you all know is by definition a crowd. So let's get this done.

In the interest of trying to keep this moving at something describable as a "pace", I thought maybe we could compile a list of the current proposals here and then each pick our three favorites. Three points for being someone's first pick, two points for being someone's second pick, one point for being someone's third pick. Then look at our top three finalists or something.

PROPOSALS:
  • Belaschagă ("Beautiful-copse")
  • Benschagă ("Good-copse")
  • Berucă ("Crag", referring to the former ravines of Riverside Park)
  • Berberïă ("Barbary Coast", a nod to a certain independent streak in our province)
  • Beatifică ("That which makes one happy")
  • Liberacia (Like our province, Liberace was half Italian, and was from Milwaukee)
  • Cjartzara ("Oakland", for the name of the street that runs right through the province)
  • Cjarföglha ("Oakleaf". There's another street in Benito by that name)
  • Vittorio/Bitour
  • Taliulă ("Little Italy")
  • Belăcostă ("Beautiful Riverbank")
  • Garibaldi

Let's keep the vote open for a week, to let people weigh in. Hopefully won't need much more time than that...

For my part, my picks are:
  • Belăcostă
  • Benschagă
  • Cjarföglha

Edit: I completely forgot Iason's proposals, my bad.

I'm liking "Belăcostă". That will be my first pick for three points. (I'll come up with my second and third picks later. To be honest, not really digging any of the other suggestions) (even mine).

Sir Lüc

I'm totally on board with Belăcostă, so much so that I don't really know which other names to give points to. I suppose I'm voting for Belăcostă > Cjartzara > Berberïă.

I'm still going to ask Iason to pick two more choices for the purposes of completeness (whenever he's ready, no rush), and I'd like to keep the vote open the full week.

Is there a way to contact a bunch of Benitians at the same time to broaden the response pool, or is this effectively a case of "you snooze, you lose"?

That said, for reference:

Probably snooze and lose. There is a Benito Facebook group I made, where I used to make announcements on provincial matters, but it only has seven members and is pretty much inactive.

Sir Lüc

Yeah, I'm inclined to say snooze and lose, at least at this point in the process. When the Chancellery passes an amendment and it gets to a provincial referendum, we'll see if we can get the Chancery to send a mailer out.
