URL Statement on the Incoming Government

The agreement for a Government of National Unity, recently issued by the Seneschal, marks an important milestone in Talossan history -- a milestone that many might not have believed possible even only a few years ago.

Over the years, and especially since Reunision, Talossan politics has been marked by a deadlock between parties of what some might call the "Republican" and "RUMP" traditions. That these two camps have agreed to share the power of government on a basis of near-equality overturns our preconceptions of what Talossa could be.

Given that history of deadlock, when the opportunity arose to form a grand coalition with our previous opponents, the Union of Free Reformists was faced with certain risks. By bridging the divide, would we betray a legacy of just struggle against conservative and monarchist tendencies in Talossan politics?

For two key reasons, we concluded that the answer to that question was no.

Firstly, the Union of Free Reformists ran in this election on a platform critical of the previous minority government's centralization of authority and its tendency towards "one man band" organization; this critique was clearly one that many voters shared, as we were rewarded with an excellent vote. We found ourselves with the opportunity to actually form a strong government team of the exact type we had called for: a team chosen on merit, rather than partisan hackery. It would have been a betrayal of our voters' trust had we not tried to meet that opportunity head-on.

Secondly, the other main theme of our platform, the Democracy Agenda, remains intact as our longer-term political goal. Our Progressive Alliance partners have agreed to support legislation enacting at least one point on this Agenda. To their credit, they have shown good faith on this in the previous Cosă, not only working with us to enact the Pseudo-Real Cosă Act over the objections of some of their base, but also working well together on the project of social sanctions against Talossa's more antisocial characters.

There are no guarantees of success in politics, of course; a lot of trust remains to be built between Prog and URL ministers and caucuses. But we are confident that, when the first elections to the 20-seat Cosă arrive, the Talossan people will reward constructive engagement over ideological stubbornness. The URL's ministers pledge to prove through our actions that we have the vision and work ethic to lead Talossa.
