El Glheþ Talossan / La Cita es La Cita
April 25, 2022, 10:31:24 AM
I thought it would be a fun translation exercise to try and translate some of China Mieville's novel The City and The City. Mainly because I really like the story, it seems very relevant to how Talossa exists in the world, and it'll give be good El Glhetg practice because I learn better by doing.

If It's alright, I would like to post it here for correction and make sure I'm on the right track. Here is the first bit:

La Cita es La Cita

Pärts Viens: Besźel

I could not see the street or much of the estate.
Éu ni put vidar la stradâ ni belacop dal façiendâ.

We were enclosed by dirt colored blocks,
Noi girdevent à caramidâs pigmentadăs vianiaeasca

The second line describing the "dirt colored blocks" I'm not so sure about. I'm pretty sure I rendered it OK with "dirt-like colored bricks" but again, definitely open to a better way to translate that phrase in particular.

Carlus, your badge just looks so rad.

Thank you! It was actually the 6th or 7th one I mocked up. I did a lot of playing around with different potent backgrounds and other variations before deciding on this one.

We should not be hasty in approving this CoA.

The Tudor Rose (or English Rose) is normally reserved. We may think of changing the charges, until and unless the armiger shows why he is entitled to them.

Dean BenArd

I'm sorry Dean but I do not see any stipulation in the Talossan rules of heraldry that indicate the rose is reserved for those "entitled" in some way.

And according to the GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN HERALDRY
by JAMES PARKER
FIRST PUBLISHED in 1894

"Rose, (fr. rose): this flower is very frequently employed in coats of arms, and more frequently still in badges. "

Ad hominems aside, what it sounds like is there are no regulations surrounding this sort of behavior. I'm still learning the Talossan Political process but is there not a way to draft a rule or rules and put them up for a vote?

sadly, legislation often does not forsee and does not take in account each an every dirty trick played by politicians to get what they want. last 8 yrs in czechia are quite a good example how our idealistic constitution was often used as a toilet paper by the new generation of populistic politicians. this new political "culture" on both sides of the ocean, and as i see, also here, in talossa, unfortunately cannot be solved by rules, cos those can be twisted and surpassed, but only by keeping ethical integrity. otherwise there will be rules to correct rules to correct rules and we'll be in a formalistic legal hell.

I completely agree, but only one of those 2 things can be controlled. You can't control a persons ethics but you can at least enforce a minimum ethical standard. (I also find it interesting that apparently how severe this offense is viewed is at least mildly correlated to your macro-national political culture.)

Request the existing Premier to cancel the candidature of a candidate who was self-promoting on the voting thread. After all it's akin to Ballots with Ads of a particular candidate

He wasn't self promoting, he was answering the election related question of a voter. A question that was not answered by any other candidate before the close of the polls. If being accused of self-promotion was the reason for the other's silence, it was never made known, nor was a more appropriate place to ask such a question ever provided.

With this reasoning I request the current Premier to let the outcome of the election stand.

The newly established guidelines for badges do not require any act of His Majesty, so I think you can register one whenever you want.

-NRH

OK great! In that case I would like to also register the badge below:

A lozenge vert with bordure potenty (potenté?) argent, and over all a bee or.

I believe we have cruelly burdened the Long Fellow with the task of badge registrar, if he doesn't mind?

Really love this badge. Beautiful design. I have no clue which version of potenty you would use... I think the French, as in your arms, because it's modifying the line and not the field?

-NRH

I would gladly add it to the registry on the wiki but I currently don't have privileges.

I've been giving this some thought and I think I will apply to become a Senior Fellow. My curiosity however is what type of lecture should be presented. My expertise is in public school education, but I would think that whatever the topic of a lecture is, it should be at least tangentially relevant to Talossa. Hmm.

I don't think it necessarily has to be relevant to Talossa. Scholars of other countries don't limit their lectures and research to only subject matter related to their homeland. The whole point of a Society for the Advancement of Knowledge is for citizens to share their knowledge and expand the horizons of their fellow countrymen (and women). No matter the field of study, the sharing of knowledge and research can only improve society and by extension the country as a whole.

Whereas our Futbol team Els Soleiglhen do not currently have a Head Coach (Cäps Entraineir),

Whereas Els Soleiglhen obviously have natural talent, which can only be improved by the direction of an entraineir,

Whereas I have interest in said position,

Therefore, I, Carlüs Vilaçafat would like to petition for the position of Cäps Entraineir da Els Soleiglhen.
