[P] PETITION MADE - 7 April 2020
[G] CITIZENSHIP GRANTED - 8 April 2020

Applicant Name:
@Hal Glaze
(This applicant, for public life within Talossa, has opted to use a name different from that of their legal name.  Their true and legal name has been collected by the Ministry and shall remain confidential.)

Gender:
Male

Year of Birth:
2000

Location:
Memphis, TN

Have you been introduced to the Kingdom of Talossa by an existing citizen?
NO

About Myself:
I am a full-time student and, as I intend later to pursue postgraduate studies, will probably remain at least a part-time student for the next several years. In my free time I read, draw, and write fiction and poetry, mostly bad. I also am an avid music fan and collector of vinyl records, if at best a congenitally incompetent musician. As something of an enthusiast (and, needless to say, frequent wearer) of vintage menswear and traditional "Ivy" style, I am often found shopping for clothes at thrift stores; I also enjoy attending the opera, on the rare occasions that I can afford to purchase tickets.

Do you have any previous experience with, or membership in, any "micronations"?
NO

Is it okay if Talossan citizens contact you by e-mail?
YES

Is it okay if Talossan citizens contact you by telephone?
NO

Why I am Interested in Becoming a Talossan:
I first discovered Talossa whilst aimlessly meandering about the World Wide Web, in search of something interesting to click on. Needless to say, Talossa soon proved very interesting. Very interesting indeed.
I was immediately taken by the gleeful eccentricity of the whole Talossan experiment. Here was a group of people who promoted political parties with lightly self-disparaging memes and poorly advised puns, who operated a fully functioning government that included a Ministry of Stuff, and who infused everything they did with an idiosyncratic and infectious sense of humor.
Yet I also was soon likewise impressed by the seriousness and dedication with which Talossans committed themselves to their nation. It became clear that Talossa was not merely a few people's vanity project, but a vast and very real community, one that shared a deep and inextricable bond across borders of place, origin, perspective, and culture. Whatever this was, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it.
I am something of a writer, albeit not a particularly good one, and even a bit of a musician, albeit a still worse one, and I hope to make what contributions I can to the growing Talossan artistic canon. I also have long had an interest in language and linguistics--indeed, this was one of the things that first drew me to Talossa--and would like few things better than one day to become a fluent speaker of the Talossan language. Moreover, I have lurked enough on Wittenberg to know that Talossa hardly lacks for political excitement, and whilst I harbor no ambitions (at present, at least!) of becoming Seneschal, I do plan to be an engaged and active citizen insofar as I can.
Thank you all, very much, for showing me so often the best of what something like Talossa can be, and for offering me the opportunity to become a part of it. With your permission, I hope soon to join you, and I hope to be able to play some small part in the ongoing symphony of this nation.
(Only not the oboe. Lord help me if I try to play the oboe.)

Where did you hear about the Kingdom of Talossa?

Azul, all! Many thanks for the welcome. I look forward to getting to know some Talossans over the days to come, and to participating in what ways I can in the life of the Kingdom. I thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this community.

All the best,
Hal

Sir Lüc

I must say it'd been a while since I last read a truly engaging essay. Benvenescu à Talossa, Hal! I hope you'll indeed stick around.

If I may, how long have you been lurking for? We do have quite a bit of citizens who have lurked on Witt (for extensive periods of time, even!) before getting around to applying.

What instrument(s) do you play? Edit: wait, the oboe. I misread that last bit as "try to learn the oboe".

Thanks! I've been lurking on and off for years, really--I got interested some years ago but ultimately never took the plunge; I remembered Talossa fairly recently when thinking of things to explore on the Interwebs whilst social distancing, and on returning I found myself, as they say, "hooked."

And re: instruments: on the contrary, you read it correctly the first time; I ought to have phrased it better, looking back. I have never attempted to play the oboe, but I have attempted other woodwinds, to largely disastrous results, and I have it on good authority that the oboe is not among the easier of the bunch. I used to play the euphonium, although I doubt I'd remember much if I picked it up now. I do sing and on occasion compose music using the trusty computer, and I am at present working on learning guitar and banjo, so we'll see how that goes.

Hah, so you basically know everything about us already. That'll make for a boring immigration fortnight...

Hey, I also play the euphonium! My primary instrument would be the trumpet (not that I'm any good), but I've recently been lent one to play on the side, just for fun. It's a very fun and versatile instrument to play, unfortunately it's stuck in Padua while I'm quarantined at home.

You are correct that oboe is the evil and other woodwind instruments are too. I would recommend you to come back into the warm embrace of the brass family and reject the woodwind heathens.

And regarding singing, we do have our own Grammy winning extraordinaire, @GV, so you're in good company on that account too!

GV

Ha!  Just to be clear, I won a Grammy along with the rest of the Houston Chamber Choir in the 'Best Choral Peformance' category for our 2017 recording of the complete choral works of Maurice Duruflé.  :-)

Welcome to Talossa!

Enríc Cjaçifiçeir

Many thanks for the kind welcome, all. It's clear that Talossans are quite a musical people. To GV, gratüleschiuns! (And apologies if I'm mangling el Glheþ.)

I only just recalled another possibly germane hobby of mine: I've always had something of an interest in heraldry, and I've designed a few coats of arms for friends, family, acquaintances, etc., in my time. Would anyone know what system of rules Talossan heraldry generally follows, and how I might be able to get involved therewith?

(Also: I realize I'm probably putting the cart before the horse a bit here, but I'd be interested to know how, and where, one gets one of those nifty Talossan names people have.)

Thanks, all, for your kindness and your help. Oc'halà, I look forward to joining you as a fellow Talossan soon.

You'd want to get in touch with the College of Arms's @Béneditsch Ardpresteir ; there's this Wiki page on rules (shameless plug: read the Wiki! it's mostly good stuff!), and this was a nice thread in the old Witt about some heraldic rules, and apart from that, I think they can generally be narrowed down to 1) no metal on metal, or colour on colour; 2) only "standard" metals and colours.

Not untimely at all. You generally just ask in the right board, optionally providing a bit of insight on the origins of your surname (if you know any), as that's usually the trickiest part.

Azul.
My question is: What is your favourite school subject?

Iason Taiwos

My favorite school subject was Anna Pham. She sat across from me in English class. I studied her every move. She smelled nice. Alas, I never got up the bravery to ask her out. She was killed in a botched gas station robbery attempt, so now I'll never know if she would've gone out with me.

Well. It's rather hard to beat Mr. Taiwos's answer, for impact at least:

My (much more prosaic) answer, though, is: English usually, although I have been on occasion seduced away by history.
