New initiative: The Mixtape exchange program

a few months ago, I proposed to the government a new cultural initiative, and it's only now that I had the time to act on it.

Here is the idea: to propose musical mixtapes in the form of Youtube unlisted playlists, that have the following rules:

1 ) Between 6 and 15 songs. You can have less than 6, or more than 15 (though 15 is LONG, as you'll see with #2)
2 ) Maximum duration of 45 minutes. The idea is to listen in 30-40 minutes.
3 ) You have to follow one of the 4 allowed types of mixtapes (see below)
4 ) This is NOT a contest like the TMT. We don't rank the mixtapes, though I could see an annual distribution of prizes like "most original" or "best themed", but the idea isn't to see who will make the most popular
5 ) You should use either lyrics videos, fixed image videos or something like that. The idea is that we LISTEN to the mixtape, not WATCH IT. Not all of us have Spotify, but everyone has youtube...
6 ) No flooding: you can only post 1 mixtape per week, per category, per person, unless later we change it to 1 per day. I want to listen to all of your mixtapes so if you start sending me 10 per day, I won't be able to.
7 ) VARY IT UP! Don't just put your favorite songs... in fact, in the example playlist below, there are some I don't like that much, but they follow the theme. Don't just put "My top 10 songs for the week". Do an effort of thinking about one of the categories and fill it up.

So, the categories (for now):

LIGHT:
A) By STYLE: All of the songs are of the same style, for example, Power balads, Drum intensive songs, etc...
B) By THEME: All of the songs follow a certain theme: going to the movies, falling in love, they talk about the same thing

HEAVIER:

C ) it tells a STORY: This is what I am looking for: songs that together, tell a story. They don't necessarily mix well together, but they do tell a story. Think about Pink Floyd the Wall...

D ) They are LINKED: Ok, this is what I am posting today. The songs have a link between them. It's not a theme or a style, it's something in the Lyrics. Like one of our radio DJs in Montreal (and perhaps elsewhere) take requests, but the next song must start with the letter that was the last letter of the previous song. For example: Bohemian Rhapsody -> You can still rock in America -> A farewell to Kings -> Sledgehammer...

In my case, well, the link is OBVIOUS. It's 8 songs, about 29 minutes. The 3th and 4th are ok, but 5th and 7th are 2 of my favorites!

I wanted to do a story mixtape to show how it could look, but I ended up making another linked one to give as another sample.

This time, I will explain it. You can view the Mixtape here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd82cOX2zOs8CAGeG4whRODHJMe_DKIgA

We start with:

1 ) Bad reputation by Joan Jett.
2 ) Cherry Bomb, another song by Joan Jett from the band: The Runaways
3 ) Kiss me deadly, from another signer/guitarist from The Runaways, Lita Ford
4 ) Close  my eyes forever - Lita ford again, with Ozzy Osborne
5 ) Ozzy Osborne with Crazy Train
6 ) Paranoid by Black Sabbath, sung by Ozzy Osborne
7 ) Die Young by Black Sabbath, but with the second signer, Ronnie James Dio
8 ) Rainbow in the Dark, by the band Dio, lead by Ronnie James Dio
9 ) Hear N' aid - Stars, which which was a song by about 40 metal artists, including the fake/real band Spinal Tap
10 ) Big Bottom, from the fake/real band Spinal Tap
11 ) Girlschool - 20th Century Boy. The backup signer/bassist in that song is Victory Tihsher Blue who plays Cindy in "This is Spinal Tap"
12 ) Wasted, by The Runaways, where the original Bassist was replaced by Victory Tischer Blue... and which featured Joan Jett as the lead signer.

Didn't assemble the youtube list yet, but here's an idea for a theme:

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Virus Alert
The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me
Disturbed - Down With The Sickness
Michael Jackson - Behind The Mask
Joy Division - Isolation
The Prodigy - Take Me To The Hospital
Bee Gees - Stayin Alive
Celine Dion - All By Myself
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
Depeche Mode - Clean

Nerd facts:
- the correct way to describe Spinal Tap is "slightly fictitious".
- Cherie Currie, former lead singer of the Runaways (memorably depicted by Dakota Fanning), featured in a deleted scene for This Is Spinal Tap as the lead singer of the support act. Remember in the film where most of the band have prominent cold sores at one stage? The joke originally was that they all caught them from Cherie Currie's character.

I'd totally forgotten about that. A long time ago, I saw a four hour version of Spinal Tap, where somebody had edited all the deleted scenes back into it (it was a bootleg VHS tape...probably wasn't exactly four hours, but it was considerably longer than the official version.) To be honest, when I watched it (in my teens), I probably didn't yet know who Cherie Currie was.
This made me briefly consider "fake/slightly fictitious bands" as a theme for my own mix tape, but I can only think of four off the top of my head. (Tap, the Rutles, Niggaz With Hats, and CB4.)

How can you forget Britain's greatest slightly fictitious band, Bad News? (This came out before Spinal Tap; Lemmy from Motörhead has a cameo; and yes, 3 out of 4 members of the band were in The Young Ones.)

"You didn't let the dog in free, did you?" Lol, this is great. Can't believe I've never heard of this before. Thanks for sharing this, Miestra. (Three out of four of the Young Ones, and a Lemmy cameo, and I dldn't know anything about this? I feel ashamed.)

Would Hedwig and the Angry Inch and the Blues Brothers count as "fake bands"?

Fake bands, maybe, but the point of a slightly fictitious band is that they make real-world appearances, write their own songs, play their own instruments etc. Given that criterion, both Spinal Tap and Bad News were more real than the Monkees.

"You nervous, Den?"

. . . were in 1966.

The Monkees' first two albums (both released in 1966) were studio-written session-musician stuff with the Monkees just doing the lead vocals, but from the third (Headquarters, May 1967) on, they weren't.

Thanks for that, Istefan. I should also acknowledge that The Monkees as a TV show was genuinely innovative and Michael Nesmith was and is a true talent.
