Autófil Totally-Not-Scripted Entertainment Productions Inc. is pleased to announce the return of the Talossan Football Association for 2023!

What it is: The AFT is not a fantasy sports league, but rather a fictional sports league.

What do you do? The AFT uses a "scorinator" program to generate scores between sports teams or individual competitors in a variety of sports, often in a sort of worldbuilding context.

Why do you do it? The idea behind the AFT is that it's something that helps generate activity on Witt. People like having a little bit of bragging rights, a little light-hearted smack talk -- this is why each province is automatically granted a team. The idea is that checking in on the regular -- even just once a week to see if they can do a little Witter-cooler bragging -- is something that will help entice people to become regular visitors. It also happens to add a little "worldbuilding flavor" to our beloved nation.

How can I help? Well, like I said, this isn't a fantasy sports league. There's no real way to participate in that sense -- it's more like being the average sports fan. You can watch the games, but you probably don't have the ear of the general manager or head coach of your favorite team.

At this time, I announce that pending any community feedback, the 2022 slate of teams returns, namely:

As with last season, I am also accepting teams from various organizations within Talossa. The Royal Talossan College of Arms, for example, or the Zouaves of the Royal Bodyguard. Similarly, I would like to cap the number of teams at twelve. The schedule will be released Sunday, June 4, with Week 1 of the season starting June 11. Each Sunday, teams play, and ultimately their schedule will consist of two games against each division opponent (one home, one away), and one against each non-division opponent (split between home and away, alternating year after year). Throw a bye week or two in there, and the Final will be played around early October.

As with before, I can provide more information on request regarding the scorination process and the file I have written to simulate a game of Talossan football, and the slew of stats and probabilities will be making a return this year because I am a massive nerd facing the odds as an underdog is fun.

Can Péngöpäts defend their title? Will the Blizzard thaw in the Maricopan Sun? Will Cézembre avoid being screwed over on a weird technicality on the last weekend on the regular season?* These questions and more will be answered on the pitch!

* I can answer this question now: yes, this year I will not allow a team to finish higher in the Wild Card standings than a team they finished lower than within their division.

Let me think on this one just a bit, if you don't mind. I know last year there was some apprehension from myself and others about having parties able to sponsor teams, but I also don't want to reject it out of hand.

Double-posting, I know, but I have an idea -- all non-provincial teams could play a round-robin pool in the week leading up to the schedule publication to determine which teams qualify for the four non-provincial spots. So Pengopats would have to qualify for the AFT just to defend their title in the first place.

Alternatively, perhaps they automatically qualify by winning the whole thing last year? Open to feedback on this.

In the meantime, I will approve the addition of the TNC team and the Ministry of Justice, pending the submission of Talossan- and English-language names (as well as a TZL name for the Bedposts, please, Braneu). I think a play-in qualifier mitigates some of my concern about politics-centric teams, since it's no longer a question of who can sign up first, so much as a question of whose team gets the chips to fall in their favor. RNGesus knows no favoritism and shows no mercy.
