Registered, user name is Taiwos. (And apparently I made an account on lichess back in 2017, and have absolutely no memory of doing so, or why)

Barclamïu da Miéletz

I could try. I absolutely suck in chess but the tournament seems like fun. Please keep my timezone in mind (CET/CEST | Central European Time/Central European Summer Time)

Gjermund Higraff

I haven't played against humans since the 80s (and against Mittens a few times recently just to make a fool of myself), so of course I'm in. Username gjehigra.

Some clarifications:

Tournament format
We're doing a swiss tournament, which basically means winners play winners and losers play losers (of course the first round is random).

However there are some complications - like players not meeting twice, there not always being even groups of players with the same number of points, a preference for players switching colours, etc - that make assigning the pairings manually a bit too complex, so I'm using a site for the pairings, in this case swissonlinetournament.com. I don't know the exact algorithm used, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere.

There will be 5 rounds played, which should usually be enough to determine a winner. It means you won't play all players, but you will be likely to face the players that are around your level towards the end.

Scheduling your match
Basically it is up to you to contact your assigned opponent and schedule your match. Keep in mind time zone differences. This might mean that if you live in Cape Town and your opponent lives in Melbourne, you might have to get up early whereas your opponent might have to stay up late.

I've provided a deadline. This should be plenty of time, but of course if you have a good reason (for example you happen to be going on vacation for three weeks) an extension will be granted, provided this was communicated to me. If a match remains unplayed and it turns out one player has tried to schedule a match whereas the other player has been unresponsive and not asked for an extension the active player wins by default.

No reason to wait until the deadline of course. The sooner you send a pm to your opponent asking to schedule your match the better,

Platform
You are free to use whatever platform you agree on with your opponent, but if you can't agree on a platform the default will be lichess.org, which I like because it runs on donations and doesn't steal your data. If you have questions about how to use lichess please let me know.

Of course, if you are able to physically meet and play on an actual board with an actual chess clock, please do! (Ideally do record your game as well in that case.

Time format
The time format used will be 10 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move, which means a game should usually last between 15 and 30 minutes. However, if you and your opponent both agree on a different format that's fine. Don't go crazy though. No ultrahyperbullet or stuff like that please.

Results
Once you have your result please post it here, ideally with a link to the game so we can all have a look at what happened.

(Actually if you have agreed on a time, if you want you can post it here as well along with your lichess account so people might be able to watch along live.)

Outside assistance
Chess engines, tablebase, opening books, help from a friend, etc, during your game, are obviously all BANNED. Don't do it. It's all for fun anyway. No cheating...

If there are any questions about the rules please let me know.

Oh right, I misread and though it was going to be 1 pm today.

So we're off. Looks like you both didn't need much time at all. Marcel takes the lead in the competition with a solid performance
