On this day, the Free and Sovereign Province commemorates the birthday of Giuseppe Garibaldi, for whom our southern canton is named. Italian patriot, general, and republican, his efforts to lead the reunification of Italy and his legacy overall have led one historian to describe him as "the only wholly admirable figure in modern history".
