Inspiration: the people deserve a new kind of politics

Talossa is an amazing place where you can run for office and make laws.  It's large enough that votes matter, but small enough that personal relationships are also meaningful.  It's big enough that you can build a legacy, but small enough that you don't have to wait to get started.  It's amazing!

But here's the thing: it's also much more.  It's not just a place where people make laws and run for office.  It's also a community and a culture and a history, just like any other nation-state.  And the Progressive Alliance knows that, and we aim to preserve it.

Make space to be silly.  The first post in this forum was a goofy, eye-rolling joke.  That's not an accident.  A political party isn't just a group of people with a political agenda, it's also a group with a shared cultural vision.  Many Talossans don't know this, but there used to be a lot more space to be silly here!  People would make dumb jokes with a lot of early Internet culture stuff, and shared nerdy enthusiasms found frequent expression: Monty Python, pirates, bacon, and all of that silly stuff.  We need to support that -- not just with vague assent, but by taking a public stance and being an active advocate.

Don't yuck their yum.  If someone dares to create something new, organize something new, try something new, then they should only ever be greeted by joy.  Give joy for joy.  Unless their efforts are offensive or dangerous, then no one should sneer at them.  Indeed, we should actively work to celebrate and uphold those who are putting themselves out there.  Even if you don't agree with another person's politics, we should celebrate each other's culture.  To put it another way, as I often do with my kids: don't yuck someone else's yum.

Cultivate new traditions.  I am going to bring to the Progressive Alliance a proposal to revive old fragments of culture and reinterpret them in a new way.  Let's bring new traditions to life, and see them thrive (or subside) in a new world.  Our civic culture has decayed over years of neglect.  The Government needs to be an active voice in this right from the top.  The Seneschal's speeches on cultural events to celebrate need to be just as frequent as their contributions to legislating -- if not far greater.

The Progressive Alliance will work to ensure that there is space for joy to thrive, so that our culture will not just survive -- it will grow.
