Can someone explain to me how Talossan Football works? I've been interested in it for a while and I read the rules a bunch of times but I still dont really get it (especially the Runners...)

I'm gonna be honest, I'm can't, because I got about halfway down the page and became hopelessly confused.

I want to watch this one day though. It sounds significantly more interesting than American or European football.

We been knew, I just think its very interesting. I asked because I plan to do something with it but there are some aspects of the rules that seem wrong. Like seriously, what is a Runner supposed to do when they cant kick, catch or carry the ball?

(also, most Talossan things, such as the language or Talossa itself, are ridiculous nonsense dreamed up by inactive citizens lets be real here)

Talossan football is modeled and blended from a variety of games including gridiron, association, rugby, etc. with an overlay of chess nomenclature

I'm currently working on a small project in my spare time which involves Talossan Football. Since you were involved in its creation 14 years ago (jesus thats ages ago), would you mind if I asked you some questions about the rules? (At least until Hool creates an account on NewWitt)

Sure happy to start a discussion - there may be things to drag over from proboards to here as well.

I think an addition to this would be to have starting positions after a hike setup similar to those in https://chess960.net/ if there were a full compliment of 16 players per side, or if less then a similar mirroring

I am a referee for North American Gridiron Football, and it would be good to attract similar officials for Rugby (including 7s which could be a good variant for Talossan), Soccer Football, and Aussie Rules Football to confer.  There might need to be an opera expert as well, and given the existence of nets, perhaps a volleyball and lacrosse official as well.

Probably the best reverse analogy for Talossan Football would be Calvinball https://calvinandhobbes.fandom.com/wiki/Calvinball

Runners are supposed to be "essentially equivalent to rugby players," but as far as I can see, they're just worse quebecs (the supposed equivalent to gridiron quarterbacks).

That's really interesting! On the "Talossan Football" wiki page, Runners are described as 'like a gridiron football "eligible receiver"', while Protectors are like Rugby players. Not knowing much about North American football, I googled the term and it looks like eligible receivers are the ones that are allowed to catch a forward pass, right? In that case, why does the "Rules to Talossan Football" page say that Runners cannot catch, hold or carry the ball? It's weirder still since Runners can score touchdowns if they're in possession of the ball in an end zone, but how can they even possess the ball if they can't carry it?

On that note, is there some sort of organisation that is in charge of the rules? If so, it might be good to get them to meet up to suss out this and possible other inconsistencies in the rules.

EDIT: The plot thickens: Does "A runner may not be the first player to contact a ball sent forward by any player on his team" refer to the first time the ball is sent forward by his team in a given play or does it mean they de facto cant ever catch a forward ball?

I've also been thinking about this line in the rules:
Quote from: Rules of Talossan FootballThe cézembre ("zoomer," shirt) of each player must be well-marked, indicating to the opposition, officials, and spectators, the player's position.

I believe this could be easily achieved with uniform numbers:

PositionNumber range

Keeper0, 00

Quebec01 - 19

Runner20 - 39

Backer40 - 59

Nomad60 - 79

Protector80 - 99

Thoughts?

The numbers are slightly different, but this was exactly how I figured the issue would best be solved. American football does it, no reason Talossan football can't.

Who is the current National Gamemaster? I was hoping that I and potentially other interested people could get a governing body of Talossan Football going and fix and clarify a few of the rules on the Wiki.
