Welcome, @Owen !  I'm not sure if we have any Belgian citizens - tell us about yourself!  Why do you want to be a politician?

Azul @Owen! It's quite easy to become a politician in Talossa, you can just ask to join a party here and you'll be a member of parliament. Alternatively, if you have money, you can even make your own political party.

Azul! Thanks for the warm welcome!
To answer your question, I've always been deeply interested in politics, but a lot of my inspiration actually comes from frustration with macro-national government. Living in Belgium, it often feels like current policies don't benefit the everyday citizen at all sometimes they just make life harder, or they feel completely nonsensical.
My goal is to help create or support a system that truly puts the people first. I love the idea of a direct or highly transparent system where ordinary people can vote on every single law via a public website, giving a clear, real-time picture of what the population actually wants. I've been looking into the political parties that Talossa has, and if I become citizen, I might join the Progressive Alliance.

I'd be curious to hear about one of the nonsensical policies in Belgium.  I can share a weird one from my residence in Massachusetts in the United States: for most of my life, it has been illegal to have a "happy hour" where alcoholic drinks are on sale at a bar or restaurant during a certain period of time.  It's crazy, but the restaurant lobby fights ferociously to keep the ban every time it's discussed.

If you don't mind, let's not discuss political parties right now?  It's considered unethical in Talossa for a political party to recruit prospective immigrants -- if someone pitches you on joining a party before you become a citizen, please let us know.

Thanks Owen for telling us more about your plans once you become a citizen. What are some areas where you see room for improvement with respect to Talossa's governance? I mean, as in, putting the people first?

These are one of the weirdest policies in Belgium: Escaping prison is actually legal, but you will get sent back to prison if you damage a lock or bribe a guard or escape in your prison uniform. In Leuven you can be fined for scaring someone at anytime, in Lier it is illegal to keep more than 5 cats in a single apartment. And to answer the question of Mr. Tzaracomprada, I currently don't know much about Talossa so I don't know if the system currently has flaws or not so I don't know if there's in my words "room for improvement".

Germany does that as well.

@Owen Will you like to serve Talossa as a politician or else? You can join any political parties after becoming a citizen, before it is called Broosking in Talossa

Azul Owen!

I visited Belgium when I was about 13. The only thing I really remember is buying a Garfield keychain in the hotel lobby! Who knows where it is now 41 years later though. It's nice to meet you.

This is amazing!  So I looked this up, and I guess it's just accepted that your natural desire for freedom will make you want to escape and people shouldn't be penalized for this.  That's pretty cool.

You don't get to stay free, though, it seems like.  It's just that there's no specific crime for "escaping from prison."

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I didn't expect to get a response from the King or the Seneschal. And I think you get to stay free, as most of the times it's in the news that people escaped but they never say that they were brought back to prison (source: VRT NWS). And to answer the question of Mr. Moin, I believe to serve Talossa as a politician, if I become citizen. And finally, Your Majesty, how did you like Belgium when you visited? (if you can remember lol)

What?!  That's amazing.  So if a murderer strips naked and escapes without damaging anything, he just gets to be free?  I would never have guessed that!

We are a very close community in a lot of ways, and His Majesty often chats about issues of the day.  In fact, His Majesty serves a couple of other roles, as well... part of the reason why he was chosen as the sovereign was his long history of amiable attitude and dedication to serving the country.

You too could rise to a high position after a little time and effort!

EDIT: Probably not king unless you overthrow him in a coup.

We'll believe you about the coup thing... for now.  But we better get the special police to keep a sharp eye on you, considering how you've already been planning to break out of Belgian prisons, lol.

But yeah, His Majesty does a lot around here!  He was also our Secretary of State for years prior to his ascension.

That is helpful, thanks. I clearly missed the response, my apologies Owen.
It is a good idea to learn about the Kingdom before entering its politics. We have had several new immigrants jump into our politics immediately and I have a growing concern that this is not to the benefit of the country. You will likely get several people courting you as we enter into one of our frequent election periods. Should ANYONE attempt to recruit you during your immigration application period please know this is a heavily discouraged practice known as broosking.
