Wittenberg / GV's belated tribute to Duke John
December 07, 2024, 09:55:51 AM
John Woolley and the late Fritz von Buchholtz must be mentioned in the same breath.  In the spring and summer of 2005, neither could have stood up to Ben Madison alone and have the inadvertent, but potent result of persuading Tomás Garçeir to take his own stand against Ben regarding keeping the Talossan language accessible to all, a fully-unintended result that directly led to the unintended result of Ben's and Amy's abdication and renunciation, liberating the Kingdom and driving a stake into the heart of the 2004-2012 Republic, even if the Republic took eight years to realize this and come to its senses.

John may have had ulterior motives for welcoming us back into the Kingdom in 2011-2012, but as the 2005-2011 Kingdom was becoming moribound and stagnant (nothing compared to the Republic's woes, I must add), it was in his and the Kingdom's best interest to let Reunision happen.  When push came to shove, John did not stand in the way of progress, even if by doing so, he might have inadvertently driven his own stake into the heart of the 2005-2011 "SCA-Talossa" culture under which a lot of Talossans were still having a lot of fun.

Two incredibly difficult and ultimately-positive events from John's reign come to mind where his leadership and mere presence on the Throne was critical.

First, we had a citizen convicted in a court of law of crimes unbecoming a Talossan.  When this came to light, the entire country ran around like a chicken with its head cut off at a PR disaster that never came to pass.  When we were all understandably pining for this citizen to be expelled immediately, John remained calm, quiet, and advocated for this citizen's removal by legal and appropriate means, so long as it was done in a timely and orderly fashion.  In an orderly and timely fashion, this removal came to pass.

Secondly, in June 2019, Ben Madison made a serious attempt at persuading the country to let him back in.  I was one of the Senators at that time who would have blocked a për vote on his citizenship-restoration, should it have ever come to pass, but in the end, I will always suspect Ben knew John never forgets, even if he is not vindictive.  The prospect of having to deal with John Woolley, not to mention a vociferous cadre of Talossans who also remembered, caused Ben to think twice and persuaded him to leave Wittenberg and not make contact with us any longer.

John Woolley has always loved Talossa.  Even if he has certain ideas of how Talossa should be run, he has still loved Talossa.  He served with competence and for a long time, before that serving brilliantly as Secretary of State.  He and Fritz both are titans of Talossan history.

John, as much as you have dropped some large eggs, they have only ever been in the full and sole context of Talossa.  I still thank you for everything, and from all I've heard about you, I continue to wish I'd known you, Manus, and your families outside Talossa, even as I've known a number of you within.

Houston Chamber Choir (www.houstonchamberchoir.org) is taking a tour of two of the Baltic countries plus Sweden.

Of course, I will want a massive Euro-Talossan presence at our performances.  As we get closer, I will have a firm itinerary.

@Ián Anglatzara, that means you.  :-)

If I remember rightly, Mencei should or must be from an opposition party.  Who wants to stick their hand up this time 'round?

First of all, my life outside of Talossa has been incredibly hectic in the past year, owing mainly to helping in taking care of my father, whom our family and with his voluntary blessing put into assisted living at least on 19 May of this year.  He is doing very well there, and I've moved into a friend's guest-room for six months to a year.

Hence the reason why today almost passed me by.

"A Nation Sundered" describes Mad King Ben in March 2004 accusing another Talossan citizen, Kane Cavier, of domestic violence, a charge I continue to believe to be utterly false, even if his long-ago record of petty crime to that point might give a different impression cosmetically.  I still believe Kane.

Ben by doing this wanted Kane out of Talossa, and he figured things would get so hot for Kane he would flee the country and the greater Talossan nation altogether.

Ben did succeed in driving Kane out of the country, but ten of us and more soon thereafter went with him to form the 2004-2012 Republic of Talossa.

Unfortunately, mistakes were made.  We never should have kicked everyone but us off of Wittenberg X.  Only Ben and Queen Amy needed to have been tossed out.  Had we done things that way, I think we would have gotten far more sympathy from far more people, but at this time, no-one was thinking with a clear head.

Moreover, talossa.com was in the hands of "one of us" and was redirected from the kingdom and to the Republic's new webspace. This should have been done with far more sensitivity, to be sure.  It is late, and I do not have the time to fully discuss that point other than to say we should have done something different with talossa.com

Both these mistakes affected innocent people, and for those mistakes, we have continually been sorry they occurred.

The colossal edifice of the history of the Republic vs. King John and so much else will be best told by others.  Moreover, even the Republic itself was anticlimactic.  When Ben falsely accused Kane of domestic violence online in a public forum, the situation became fully untenable, and "old Talossa" was irreparably damaged.

The healing of Talossa began on 1 June 2004, and it continues today.  In fits and starts, perhaps, but since Ben left, no Talossan has appeared with the same level of vindictive spite Ben Madison had toward those he didn't care for, even with his many, many good qualities both as a Talossan and as a person outside Talossa.

The 2004-2012 Republic of Talossa is a cautionary tale that ended miraculously with Reunision on 20 April 2012.  I still find it unbelievable so many of us "down south" came to the Kingdom who had never been in the kingdom before, and in my mind, Reunision was a nigh-on complete success.

May Talossa live on, and may it continue to be free, fun, and fair. - GV

https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/legacyremembers/florence-yarney-obituary?id=35192717

Florence was a giant of Talossan history, serving as king from 1987-1988 when she abdicated in favor of Ben Madison, who was king again until August 2005.

She actually died in 2022, but when I got a death-anniversary reminder for John Eiffler, I thought to see if anyone else had passed away.  The one I could find is Florence, and the photo in the above obituary matches that I remember from seeing her in Ben's Talossan videos at Ben's coronation in 1988.

From that video and from all accounts, she seemed exactly as the obituary says she was: possessed of a keen and flamboyant style of teaching and much-beloved by all who knew her.

RIP, Florence.  I wish all of us in Talossa (including I) could have known you.

Wittenberg / Happy 44th birthday to Talossa!
December 26, 2023, 11:47:24 AM
Talossa is worth fighting for, even as inactive as I am.

In a world that grows darker by the day, there has never been a greater need for an outlet of absurdity and fun.  At its best, this is Talossa.

May she endure another forty-four years and far beyond... - GV

Wittenberg / Witt XI archive project long-ago completed
December 31, 2022, 06:31:11 PM
Only now do I bother to open Witt2.7z that exists at www.libraryoftalossa.com and unzip the file.

Alexandreu Davinescu did the archive for us about 1.5 years ago, he has reminded me to see if everything on it works on my end, and in typical GV Talossan fashion, I promptly forgot about it, my Intel Mac Mini at the time not having enough horsepower to really work with the gigantic archive (at least 3+ GB - slowly uploading to iCloud).

The archive seems to be working unbelievably well and as AD intended all that time ago.
