The story of human progress is a story of cheaper and more plentiful energy. Draconian restrictions on energy, not climate change itself, is what will reverse the trend of dramatically decreasing numbers of climate-related deaths we have seen over the past century. Climate challenges are real but can be addressed without global impoverishment.

I'd like nothing better than to be proven wrong.

Everyone knows what my ideal bill would be; it was voted down by the TNC with no comment on potential improvements. There's no point in me proposing anything else until I know what the TNC will support.

I'm not accusing the TNC of lying so much as reading between the lines to figure out how it plans to obfuscate without directly contradicting itself. I'm sure that there is some discussion on the TNC board about monarchy reform, but any action appears all too likely to be postponed indefinitely, especially considering the TNC's reluctance to discuss the issue to this point.

Putting forward a "weak sauce" proposal and then never taking it anyway would not make the TNC liars, but it would not be what most people think of when they hear monarchy reform, and that's what I'm pointing out.

Wittenberg / Yes, We Still Need Monarchy Reform

I am glad the King has committed to being more active. If he sticks to it, it will be one of the best things to happen to Talossa for a long time.

That doesn't alleviate the need for Monarchy reform. Talossa needs an active Monarch, and it is just too easy to slip into inactivity when there is no accountability. His Majesty has pledged before to engage more frequently, only to fall short of expectations.

Quote from: King John on December 26, 2021, 06:10:44 PM
I have worked at resuming a healthy level of activity, and I will redouble my efforts in the new year.  I can report personally that I have retired from my often-demanding work only recently, which will afford me the leisure time to devote myself more vigorously to my duties (as well as to the delightful demands of being a grandfather).   I call on all Talossans to do the same.

This is but one example. Had he been successful before, his latest post would not have been necessary.

To be clear, if a Convocation to select a new King were held today, I would support King John. I am confident his activity could only be improved if he were subject to the oversight that a Convocation once every several years would provide.

Finally, if you expect any ideas from the TNC on this front, forget about it. Their platform includes this gem:

QuoteThe TNC is engaged in intra-party discussions on reform of the institution of the Monarchy. Potential areas of reform include the re-establishment of a succession procedure, length of the term of office, and the structure of current monarchical powers, but this discussion and policy drive will not come at the expense of the effective day-to-day administration of the Kingdom's government. However, reform simply for the pleasure of tinkering is an exercise in vanity not public service. The Ziu must focus on the real needs of the country, not satisfying the crusades of a few.

This is a not so subtle way of saying that they will ignore the issue for as long as possible (maybe forever), and if you ever ask them about it, they will claim to be too busy with "effective day-to-day administration." One would think that a Monarchist party would understand that the structure of the Monarchy is critical to our Kingdom and can't be brushed aside as "tinkering." The "real needs of the country" include an active Monarch, and they have no ideas when it comes to ensuring we have one.

I'd like to Clark the Seneschal Selection and Reselection Amendment: https://wittenberg.talossa.com/index.php?topic=1441.0

I personally approved the decision to get rid of most of the menu trees. All of that information is already on the wiki; all the website needs to do is pull people in and then direct traffic to the wiki if they want more information. That can be achieved with a few pages of mostly permanent information. We all know how hard it is to keep the wiki up to date, let alone the wiki and the website.

Very cool!

What is your opinion on Monarchy reform?

I recognize that anything I say in response to this will be taken as further evidence of people being mean to you, but I just want to make a few points:
-During the first few months of the term, you repeatedly promised deadlines that you didn't meet, and didn't make a lot of progress toward meeting.
-When Sir Alexandreu asked a Terp about why you weren't doing much, you very publicly promised to complete certain projects in a certain timeframe. I then very publicly announced that if you did not perform as promised, I would dismiss you.
-A few days before the deadline you set, I messaged you to remind you of your commitment.

Please don't act like you didn't see this coming.

I wish you the best.

Honorable Tuischac'h,

I am exercising my ability to act on behalf of any Minister to answer this Terp myself. I have heard from the Honorable Minister that he is  currently in the middle of intensive medical training for his military unit and has not been able to devote much time to Talossan affairs. We are hoping he can become more active soon, but in the meantime the cabinet is exploring ways to move forward on Defense priorities. This will likely involve directing most of the Ministry's attention to the Royal Zouaves.

"One is none, two is one"

Having two people with the account details is a great idea.

Also, perhaps we could have a list of things the Government can spend money on without the two week waiting period (like webhosting)

For what it's worth, I still would be most happy with something similar to the original Compromise on the Compromise. For the uninitiated:
-Convocation of everyone who has been a citizen for more than seven years meets every seven years for a vote of confidence in the King
-If the vote fails (more than 60% vote no confidence), they meet again in six months to elect a King

I understand AD's critique of this plan (even though I don't agree with it). There are plenty historical examples of elective monarchies and making this change would not turn the King into a President. I would still love to hear what S:reu Tzaracomprada doesn't like about it since I still don't know.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SENESCHAL

I come now before the King to request that he relieve Sir Cresti Siervicül and Ma la Mha, Conta Thord and Baron Hooligan, of their roles of Squirrel King of Arms and Squirrel Viceroy of Arms, respectively. They have both served the Kingdom very honorably and have my utmost thanks and gratitude. I congratulate them on behalf of Talossa for their work.

I also request that the King appoint Béneditsch Ardpresteir as Squirrel King of Arms.

Signed,
Ian Plätschisch,
Seneschal
