Not 100% sure, but it feels like 21 points may be a record in absolute points (outside finals obv). Other than that a slightly disappointing result, but Im glad to see this much consistent participation.

Of the 50 songs advancing to round 3:
-13 (of 20 starting in this year's contest) were in the Top 20 last year
-3 (of 5) were eliminated in R4 last year
-18 (of 25) were eliminated in R3 last year
-13 (of 50) were eliminated in R2 last year
-3 (of 48) are new this year

Compared to last year, new songs are doing much worse (9 new songs made it to round 3 last year).

On a somewhat related note, I have a theory about why newer music tends not to do well in the TMT20. I don't think it's because many of us individually don't like new music, but because we all like different new music. In contrast, I think most of us like the same old music, so the old music is the only music ever popular enough to make the final.

The Chain and Sultans of Swing took the top two spots in last year's final (although with Sultans of Swing on top). This, combined with the quite bad performance of new nominations, is making me think that the large number of voters is causing a "regression to the mean" in which the historically popular songs all do well and there is no room for a dark horse to make a run based on a few favorable votes.

TMT20 ROUND 3 - GROUPS 1, 2, AND 3

Round 3 consists of five groups of ten songs each. The top five songs from each group advance according to the flowchart above. Groups are drawn randomly in such a way that each group contains two 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place songs from Round 2.

We will vote on groups 1, 2, and 3 and then groups 4 and 5. Each voting period will last three days (72 hours). Votes cast after that will not be accepted, with the exception that we will always keep going until we have at least three votes per group.

Give your top four songs 4, 3, 2, and 1 points, respectively. You must give points to exactly three or four songs (awarding the 1-point vote is optional).

GROUP 1
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - Ohio
David Bowie - Starman
Dire Straits - Telegraph Road
Falco - Der Kommissar
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Gaelic Storm - One More Day Above the Roses
Kenny Rogers - The Gambler
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Rush - Subdivisions
The Who - Baba O'Riley

GROUP 2
Blue Öyster Cult - Burnin' For You
Devo - Freedom of Choice
Eagles - Lyin' Eyes
Ennio Morricone - Man with a Harmonica
Men at Work - Down Under
New Order - Blue Monday
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen - Innuendo
Toto - Africa
Whiskey Myers - On The River

GROUP 3
Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing
Earth, Wind and Fire - September
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
Foo Fighters - Walk
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood
Muse - Uprising
Police - Message in a Bottle
Rammstein - Haifisch
Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want

Tiebreakers:
- Number of voters giving 4 points
- Number of voters giving 3 points
- Number of voters giving 2 points
- PPV in Round 2
- Last year's result (1 > 2 > ... > 20 > Round 4 > Round 3 > Round 2 > other)
- PPV in Round 1 (if applicable)
- Random chance

Tactical voting refers to either giving more points than you normally would to a song because it would make the difference between it going through or getting eliminated, or giving fewer points than you normally would to a song because it might kick a song you like even more out of the competition. This is hard to prevent, but my very strong request would be to not do it. Give points to the songs you believe deserve to go through, regardless of how others are voting. Doing otherwise reduces the value of votes that came before you, which is unfair to them. Remember that it's not a competition between voters, but a collective effort to make a nice list of songs we like. Thanks.

I did my best with all the links but there is always a chance some are broken or have a wrong version or bad audio quality. If a link is broken or you have a suggestion for a better link, please contact me or post the link in the thread. Officially, we are not voting on the YouTube link, but on the listed Artist + Title.

COMMENTARY ON THE PROGRESS OF THE GAME, THE RULES, WHAT SONGS YOU LIKE, ETC., IS VERY WELCOME.
