2022 TMT20 #9

Blue Öyster Cult - Burnin' For You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oYsdAbypTk
Released 1981
From the album Fire of Unknown Origin

First nominated by Munditenens Tresplet in 2016
Previously #12 in 2017

Final Round Points - 25
No 12-point votes

This song received a 10-point vote as well three votes between 4 and 6 points. The five-year gap between top-20 appearances is, I believe, tied with Sirius/Eye in the Sky for the longest in TMT20 history.

Not unhappy with the order so far, but quite surprised at just how bad my prediction was. Especially surprised we haven't seen Crazy Train yet. Surely it will be one of the next three...

Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)

From the album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)

First nominated by Lüc da Schir for the 2019 special edition
Previously #14 in 2020

Final Round Points - 25
One 12-point vote

This is the best finish so far for any song originally nominated for the 2019 special edition.

The Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv9sDn_2XkI
Released 1969
From the album Let It Bleed

First nominated by Glüc da Dhi in 2018
Previously #20 in 2020

Final Round Points - 26
No 12-point votes

One second-place vote and two third-place votes, but no points from anyone else. This is not the only song to exclusively get points from top-three votes (the other has not been revealed yet).

Toto - Africa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTQbiNvZqaY
Released 1982
From the album Toto IV

First nominated by Glüc da Dhi in 2018
Previously #11 in 2018 and #12 in 2020

Final Round Points - 26
One 12-point vote

Received points from six out of seven voters, but besides the voter giving 12 points, no one gave it more than six. Four voters gave between 1 and 3 points.

Along with You Can't Always Get What You Want, this is the third set of tiebreaker pairs in which one song got a 12-point vote and the other only got a 10-point vote.

10 - You Can't Always Get What You Want

4 - Sultans of Swing
3 - Down Under
2 - Africa

0 - Baba O'Riley

YCAGWYW held out longer than expected, so I'm still fine with the results so far.

Probably should just give up at this point, but whatever:

5. Crazy Train
4. On the River
3. Telegraph Road
2. The Chain
1. Gimme Shelter

Sir Lüc

I was too busy to actually come up with a proper prediction (looking at previous results), but i really think I should have seen Crazy Train doing so well coming. It topped its group in round 2 and 3, I just forgot and didn't check back.

My current thinking is Gimme Shelter > Crazy Train > The Chain > On the River > Telegraph Road.

but besides the voter giving 12 points

I wonder who that person was...

Honestly though, since a top 5 definitely wasn't on the cards, I'm very happy with a P6.

2022 TMT20 #5

Dire Straits - Telegraph Road
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8bWGGA-5HM
Released 1982
From the album Love Over Gold

First nominated by Lüc da Schir in 2013
Previously #6 in 2015, #2 in 2017, #7 in 2018, #5 in 2019, #4 in 2020, and #5 in 2021

Final Round Points - 28

Received two second-place votes and one third-place vote, but no points from anyone else. Unsurprisingly it is the highest-ranking song to receive points from fewer than half of the voters.

This is the sixth consecutive year in which Telegraph Road had made the Top 20 (in fact, it has made the Top 10 in all of those years as well). If Telegraph Road makes the Top 20 again next year, it will tie Bohemian Rhapsody's record of most consecutive Top 20s (and Top 10s), set between 2015-2021.

The only song in the Top 20 this year released after the early 1980s.

From the album Rumours

First nominated by Glüc da Dhi in 2018
Previously #20 in 2018 and #2 in 2021

So, will Gimme Shelter join Bohemian Rhapsody as a repeat champion, or will the underdog Crazy Train reign supreme?
