Quote from: Bråneu Excelsio on Today at 06:24:03 PMWhen I Joined I had no idea what the Cosa was and didn't understand why would I care about one seat in it; now I'm spending 2 coffees worth of money for 1 seat.

1 vote will get you at least 2, maybe 3 seats!

* Civilian Outreach for Fun and Enjoyable Events.

* Initials
 (COFFEE)

* 50 word statement:
I have dedicated my energy to promote the values of healthy coexistence, Community, the Arts, Fun and Excitement.
My goal is to unite people through shared vissions and bring unity and positivity to Talossa; to balance different viewpoints and unite Talossa for a better future.

* Party Leader: @Bråneu Excelsio.

Arts you say? Sounds interesting.

Before you arrived I was the hyperactive dude for a while too, but even before knowing what was going on, I was recluted by the same guy who recluted you and had to quit everything later on, tricky little thing, politics.

I am always interested in how that citizen was so good at "recluting" people when the Free Democrats couldn't, even when approaching newbies right out of the immigration queue - but I suppose where all that ended up with the current "TNC potato sack" breaking. It's harder to recruit to a party of principle but it means a more resilient party in the long run.

QuoteIt's a good idea to stay out of politics, but having a seat in the Cosa is kind of fun. If you can afford the $10 dollars, making your own party seems fun, isn't it?

It is kind of fun, but it also means you become a "main character" in politics, with people from all sides lobbying you for your vote, to join their coalition, etc, and you make enemies as fast as you make friends. This is why we brought in the provision for "1 seat for new citizens", to bring in a low-stakes way to start in politics. For some reason people have just not been interested in that. Wild, as 1 seat in the last Cosa would have changed everything.

Quote from: Breneir Tzaracomprada on Today at 03:51:47 PMI really like the term Té-En-Tzells.

I realised too late that it sounds kind of like "incels", sorry about that :D

Make that four Té-En-Tzells now. I'm reminded of Karl Marx's saying that organizing the peasantry is like putting potatoes in a sack with holes in it. It seems that the TNC was something like that. Interested to hear what their two sitting Senators plan to do!

Also, it's been pointed out to me that the IND Party's call for "a more pluralistic approach to Talossan politics" is interesting given that the IND Party's leader was one of the loudest voices for a "TNC-only cabinet" excluding Sir Lüc da Schir, at the time of the last government negotiations.

POP QUIZ: what are the effective differences between these three 50 word statements?

1.
QuoteI have dedicated my energy to promote the values of healthy coexistence, Community, the Arts, Fun and Excitement.
My goal is to unite people through shared visions and bring unity and positivity to Talossa; to balance different viewpoints and unite Talossa for a better future.

2.
Quote...a coalition of independent MCs from across the political spectrum, dedicated to creating a more pluralistic approach to Talossan politics. Each member pursues their own political (or non-political) agenda without the limitations of formal party structures, fostering a vibrant, diverse range of views. Join us in shaping Talossa's dynamic and prosperous future!

3.
QuoteWe strive to protect a traditional yet democratic Kingdom.
We want to continue fostering immigration, transparency, inclusivity, and goodwill among citizens.
We promote cross-party collaboration to make our Nation more visible and our government more active.
We are honest and committed.
We also think our Province is the best.

The apparent explosion of the TNC has resulted in fragments whose politics all seem to be vague platitudes that no-one could disagree with, with no particular "unique selling point" or even significant difference between them. The Free Democrats previously asked "what does the TNC stand for"? Now we might ask "what do the various Té-En-Tzells* stand for?" I can understand why no-one wants to be associated with the infighting, paralysis or rudeness of the outgoing Government - but I can't understand why they don't stick together, if they don't actually disagree with each other.

In contrast, everyone knows what the Free Democrats stand for. And in addition to that, we're working on a specific Agenda for the New Free Democrat Government. Having a strong platform, and the team to enact it, was what led to the old TNC's landslide of a couple of terms ago. We learn.

* A Talossan word I just made up, meaning "offspring of the TNC". TNCidoj in Esperanto.

Quote from: þerxh Sant-Enogat on Yesterday at 11:48:43 AMCan you remind us what is the maximum number of allowable seats per MC ?

We don't know until after the election. It's 2000 divided by the total number of valid votes. So if there are 100 valid votes in the election, it's 20. If there are 120 votes it's 16 or 17 (I forget the rounding rule).

Also remember that you can allocate up to 1/3 of your seats off-list.

Supplementary question, Mr Túischac'h! When will the list be updated, or are we going to leave it slide until after the election?
#8
Estimat Túischac'h, I rise to deliver a Terpelaziun to the Minister of Foreign Affairs - making sure to tag @mximo, because apparently he doesn't read this board regularly..

What is the current state of progress on the Government's "re-embracing" of the League of Secessionist States, given that the Government's month of consultation received no consultation, and the Minister's previous assurance that "The first contact Will be made in the next few weeks to micronations around the world"?

And again, just to make sure:

Qu'est-ce que c'est l'état actuel des lieux à propos de la "re-éntreinte" par le Gouvernement de la Ligue des États Sécessionistes, étant donné que leur mois de concertation n'a donné lieu à aucune concertaion, et que le Ministre a donnée préleablement l'assurance que "The first contact Will be made in the next few weeks to micronations around the world"?
#9
Estimat Túischac'h, my question is for the Minister of Technology.

Following up from a previous Terpelaziun, did anything ever happen with the Database Commission?

And if so, what?

And if not, why not?

Also the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Talossan Republic.

We wouldn't be where we are now without the bravery of Tamorán dal Navă, Mic'haglh Loquatsch, @GV and so many others.

I'll be remembering our Republican heritage - now especially, since the King has knelt to let his Kingdom rise.

Fiôvâ / Re: Praisideu for the 60th Cosa.

Quote from: Bråneu Excelsio on May 23, 2024, 08:02:44 PMAzul, fiováns. I was wondering, given that we didn't get enough nomations and that seems like a common theme, what if we change the Praisideu to last 3 Cosas instead of 1?

No. Having *some* kind of election every Cosa term keeps people at least aware that Fiova exists. We could elect a single Capitan instead, but that usually led to NO nominations.

Quote from: Iason Taiwos on May 23, 2024, 04:31:06 PM(I wanted to add, tho, that the depictions of black people in these early Asterix books are pretty...well, racist. Hopefully they moved away from that as the series went on. These new American editions have a disclaimer that just says they are presenting it as originally drawn, but not mentioning why there's a need to even state that.)

Unfortunately, the broad racial caricatures remained at least until the mid-80s (and don't get me started about the Jewish caricatures in _Asterix in the land of black gold_). At least in the English translations, though, black characters eventually started talking normally rather than in what Frank Zappa would have called "comedy negrocious dialect". What can you say, it's France.

I didn't know they got a new translation, though, among professional translators the Bell/Hockridge translations are renowned for being examples of top-quality cross-cultural translations of humour; will have to check that out. But you can get weird about "accessibility for the kids". There is a French film called La Haine (1995) about kids from a deprived suburb getting up to mischief in Paris. They go to the house of a drug dealer who is a small skinny guy they call "Asterix". In the original American dub, they changed that to "Charlie Brown" because they didn't think US kids would get the reference.

(I have no idea what modern translations would do with, for example, references to The Beatles in _Asterix in Britain_, or the way that the main antagonist in _Obelix & Co_ is a caricature of Jacques Chirac.)
